School dances are something that we all get excited for when we are in middle school despite the amount of effort put into the whole experience. In sixth grade, you intend to go to every single school dance and be the coolest kid out there. You go to every single one that year, but next year you just stop going. When you’re a freshman, you dream of the day of your junior year when you finally get to go to your first prom. They’re a common excitement for the public school process.
Homecoming is the big dance for underclassmen in high school, and it doesn’t really matter what you wear as long as you buy your ticket. However, I never really got into homecoming. I’ve had rehearsal on homecoming day the past two years, and when we got out, I was too tired to go dance the night away. A date to the dance was something I didn’t even care about.
This year, I realized that I only have two more years in high school, so I should enjoy every second. What is the harm in going to homecoming? My whole theater group seemed to be going, so it shouldn’t be too lame.
Of course, I wouldn’t have minded going with a group of my friends, but having a date seemed kind of cool. I asked my best friend Rayna to be my homecoming date because going with her seemed way more fun than going with a boy. He wouldn’t dance with me, and we all know it would be really awkward.
Yesterday, it was finally time for homecoming day. We got ready at her house. Since the dance was Disney-themed, we decided to dress up as characters from movies. She went as Jessie from "Toy Story," and I went as Pocahontas (we kind of went for Disney bounding).
In this picture, we all have our own Disney bounding ideas. Left to right: Briar Rose, Pocahontas, Olaf, Maleficent, and Eve (from Wall-E).
Taking pictures was super fun and cute. After that, we went to dinner with some friends. It was so casual that it didn’t feel like any other night; we were just having a blast as always.
We got to the dance like 20 minutes after it started. It was in the cafeteria, which made our expectations drop a little. We walked in, and some of our friends were already there. As theater kids, we know how to dance. Every song seemed to be our jam, and all of us were having the best time ever. I don’t think we stopped dancing the three hours we were there.
When the dance was over, a few of us went to go get frozen yogurt and just talked for a little bit. Despite some of the fancy dresses and all our makeup, we were our normal goofy selves.
Homecoming was way better than I imagined it would be. My date was my best friend, my friends were there to make it more of a party, everyone looked beautiful, and it was way cheaper (and more fun) than prom. I think it’s important to remember that great friends can make every day more fun and memorable.
