Rejoice college students! We've finally made it through the semester. No more assignments or exams until mid-January. We have almost a month of vacation from school and we get to spend it at home!
We get to spend it at home.
For the past three and a half to four months we have been on our own making our own decisions. We've been eating excessive amounts of pizza, chicken nuggets, and ice cream, going to bed late, and not exercising regularly. We go from the dining hall, where we can eat whatever we want at any time of the day, to our houses with refrigerators full of leftovers. At college, most of your friends are within a five-minute walk of your dorm, but at home, you have to drive to go anywhere.
Now, we're back at home where our parents keep asking us what we're doing and why we're eating all their food. There's no Starbucks within walking distance of your room and you are missing your roommates. It's quite weird to go from doing whatever you want, whenever you want to now have your parents ask you where you're going every time you reach for your keys. It's a culture shock.
We spend most of Winter Break sleeping, eating, and making plans to hang out with local friends, but we still must "relearn" how to coexist with our family.
At school, you can leave your clothes on your floor and your dishes in the sink (not recommended, but hey you do you). You can also pick up your clothes and do the dishes when you want to, without the nagging of a parent.
Now that you're home, the last three and a half to four months of "adulting" seems like a distant memory as you sit in your living room with your parents telling you what to do.
It's an odd feeling, but this is the time to spend with your family and enjoy not having to do any work.
So college students, enjoy your Winter Break. When you get back to "adulting" on campus, you'll miss the binge-watching days of eating free food at home, and sleeping in your own comfy bed.
