Dorothy was right when she said "there's no place like home." Something about being surrounded by the people you love in a town of familiarity brings joy to the heart. I had the option to stay on campus this weekend, but going home to celebrate with friends and family was the best decision I've made this semester. Don't take for granted the time you have to spend with loved ones. As a first-year high school graduate, I was glad to return to my alma mater and cheer on the Eagles to another football victory. In addition, hanging out with my fellow graduates gave us a chance to reconnect since the summer. I am forever grateful for the community Jacksonville gave me. For once an eagle, always an eagle.
Packing up Friday afternoon, I was excited to attend my first football game as a JHS alum. While high school football can never live up to the Alabama Crimson Tide, I will always remember spending Friday nights making memories to last a lifetime. With great surprise, both of my best friends were also able to make it home for the weekend. College may have separated us 300 miles apart, but nothing can come between our life-long friendship. The Eagles defeated the Bulldogs 28-21 and remain undefeated in the county. I could not be more proud of my hometown and the ability to drive back on the weekends.
Saturday morning I made an effort to surprise one of my best friends. Competing in a cross-country meet, I woke up early to see Mary run her heart out. If anyone knows me, I'm not the greatest morning person. However, I'd do anything to support those I love and their passion to follow any dream. Mary and I have never been separated two months, and I barely understand how I've made it this far without her. Cherish the moments you have with your high school besties, for those memories are some of the best you'll ever have.
Coming home, I never underestimate the importance of family. Growing up with five brothers and sisters, there's never a time I was left alone without someone to be there for me. Though I have moved quite often in my lifetime, home doesn't necessarily have to be a specific location. Home is not a place; it's a feeling. I feel best when surrounded by family and friends who are there to support me through thick and thin. Never lose sight of where you come from, for often our past leads towards a greater future.
Sunday, I was a little upset to return back to Tuscaloosa. The weekend I had to share time with loved ones seemed to short for just three days. Saying goodbye to my mom and siblings, I was reminded of how much family and friends mean to me and the goals I have for my life. Seeing a sister for the first time in nearly three years, it brought tears to my eyes to think that we could have a better relationship. I have made it a goal of mine to keep in touch with those I love as a shoulder to lean on in times of crisis and an excuse for vacation when we both need a break. Lifelong relationships are hard to come by, but having a few close people who know your background makes life so much easier.
Preparing for my first college homecoming next week, I hope the connections I make at UA will be just as valuable as those I've made back in Jacksonville. After all, college gives everyone a fresh start to be the person they want to become. I can't wait to look back four years down the road to see how much I've accomplished after my time here at Bama.
Go Eagles and Roll Tide.
