When you first hear about the word “hero,” a million thoughts pop into your mind. For me, I tend to categorize: parents, friends, role models…yet more recently I have discovered a new hero, or shall I say, I have found my heroes; my heroes of today. I had been in a lukewarm stage in my life, and then something amazing happened; I saw the lyrics to a song that changed my life for the better. The song was "Touch the Sky" by Hillsong United. I began to immerse myself into their music. Their music saved me, and that is why Hillsong United are my heroes. Hillsong United demonstrates endless heroic qualities, but the ones that have stood out to me are their faith, love, and humility.
“My heart beating, my soul breathing; I found my life when I laid it down.
Upward falling, spirit soaring; I touch the sky when my knees hit the ground.”
As I read those lyrics, my heart sped up. I got a rush that ran throughout my whole body; I knew that I had found something good. I knew that my life would not be the same. It was that feeling that you get, when you have a constant tug on your heart. The feeling you get when all you want to do is cry because you are so overjoyed and you cannot contain yourself. Their faith has showed me not to fear; to step out of myself. Hillsong United helped renew me in my faith through their own. I think it is amazing how much passion and dedication they put into their work. Their music is so raw, and that is what makes it breathtaking.
Surely, this all would have not come into place if it were not for love. Their love and devotion is what makes them stand out from the rest. You can feel the pureness and sincerity in what they do. It is absolutely captivating. In my time of need, their love truly enraptured me. A hero is not only one to fight for what they believe in, but to do it with love as well. Their love has spread throughout the world. It has captured the hearts of millions. A hero to me is not someone who influences just one person, but to have their influence on many. Hillsong United has created a domino effect with their music, and it has influenced me to be a better person, and I would not doubt that it has had the same effect on millions as well.
And yet, despite all this, Hillsong United still has kept a good sense of humility. The fact that they can remain so humble, while practically having the world at their fingertips is truly amazing. What is a hero without humility? I think staying modest, and true to yourself is one of the best qualities that not only a hero, but a person in general can have. This is why I saved it for last; always the best. When they perform, they have a way of being so open and raw; is it beautiful. They have this vulnerability to them that captures you. As I spent countless hours listening to their music, and watching their videos, my heart would melt. They could have an arena full of a million people, and when they performed, they had their arms high, and eyes closed. You just know that this is not only a job to them, this is their life. Watching them, you can only stare in awe. They are spreading a light and casting it on others.
By all means, I could not have asked for better heroes. They have led me into a light while I was in darkness. They opened my eyes and heart to what I have been longing for, for so long. Hillsong United has demonstrated all the heroic qualities of faith, love, and humility, among countless others. They have influenced millions and brought out the good in others. Hillsong United has changed my life forever, and I could not be happier. If it were not for that gloomy, September night, I would not be the person I am today. On May 18, 2016, I had the most incredible night by having the opportunity to see them live. I ended up losing my voice that night praising The One who gave me mine. My spirit is soaring, and now I believe that I can touch the sky.
