I grew up watching Grease and I am unashamed to say that John Travolta as Danny Zucko was my first true crush. Sandy and Danny were the original "couple goals." SO when Fox announced the new Grease, Live! that played on Sunday, January 31st I was pumped. I am a skeptic of all TV musicals, as they are very rarely done well (see 2015's Peter Pan) but I waited with bated breathe for this new attempt. As I watched now that I am 20, I was struck by the shear number of dirty jokes. I am sure I missed more than few, but here is a compilation of my personal favorites.
Read with caution....
"I prefer to do my screaming in private" - Rizzo.
"I want to check out this year's assortment of pompoms" "They're all the same" "Not when you shake them." - Assorted T-Birds.
"Nothing makes cheerleaders nervous like being late."
"A chicks gonna have to put out before she can get in" - Kinnecky
"Want to use my virgin pin?" "At least its good for something? -Marty and the Pink Ladies
"Sometimes you want a guy whose willing to put up or shut up, y'know?" -Rizzo
Literally the whole "Sandra Dee" song. The whole thing. And the scene following in the car.
"Where you going, to flog your log?" - Rizzo.
"You like weiners?" "With relish? - Danny and Rizzo.
"There are times when speed ain't what it all about" -Rizzo.
"You've got an armed escort home." "Its not the arms I'm worried about."
"Play me like your guitar. Just pluck me!" -Jan
Lesson of the show? Grease isn't as family friendly as I thought it was. And Rizzo makes most of the dirty jokes. Girl Power.
But seriously. Grease deals with many adult issues I never noticed when I was young. Rizzo deals with a pregnancy scare, and the judgement that follows her promiscuous behavior. Frenchy faces the issue of limited options as a woman during her time. And Danny and Sandy learn compromise, they change for each other. We can learn a lot from Grease, if we only take the time to really pay attention.
