How Models Contribute To My Body Image Issues As A Man

Some women don't like the female standards, and some men don't like their standards either.

Body Image is an interesting concept. It takes the human body (regardless of gender), meshes it into something else, and then displays it as an ideal to strive towards.

Now, this can be both a good thing and a bad thing. It can give you a goal and something to motivate you towards. When you succeed, not only are you rewarded with pride, but also the attention of people who may have never paid you attention.

On the other hand, it gives people a usually unrealistic and unobtainable goal. And the media industry being what it is, decided to grab a handful of men and women, and present them as the "ideal beauties", as it were.

Of course, you might have just read the title and be thinking:

“Yooni, you’re not a girl. What the f**k would are you talking about this when you wouldn’t know anything about body image issues?”

That’s not a bad question. Usually, women suffer from this the most, given the history of female body objectification. But the key word is usually. Given that, it’s easy to overlook the fact that many men, like me, believe it or not, have body image issues too.

Women (though not without justification) complain about how men only see their bra sizes or how flat their stomachs are when it comes to measuring their attractiveness. What most of them don’t realize is that they do the same thing when it comes to men, and yet it’s ok because it’s the men. Sounds hypocritical if you ask me.

So here’s a thought; I’m an East Asian guy, AKA the one side of humanity the media industry never seems to acknowledge as a protagonist/attractive type. For someone like me, body image issues can arise when none of the models look like me. That industry, for some reason, has decided East Asian men are like measles when it comes to looking attractive to the opposite gender. But am I just filibustering? I ask you, think back to the times you watched TV shows, movies, and magazines. When was the last time the Asian guy was the 'hot one'? I thought so. No representation goes a big way in confidence and body image issues, contrary to popular belief.

Except for Steven Yeun in "The Walking Dead" appearing on that "Entertainment Weekly" cover one time, all the models on Instagram and the like are Caucasian, African-American, Latino, etc. The media industry is telling me and the world that because I look a certain way, girls will never find me attractive.

So how’s that for a thought? You’re upset and insecure because you can’t see yourself in those models because you’re a bit chubbier than they are? Look at the rise of the plus-size models, I for one hand can never see myself in any of the models either and unlike your situation, mine seems it’s going to stay that way.

In conclusion, to the female readers, I don’t blame you if you accuse me of not being attracted to you because your curves and bra size doesn’t match Alexandra Daddario’s. But I can easily point out the vice versa because my pecs and biceps don’t match Stephen Amell’s. I don’t like it, and you don’t like it. So let’s get rid of those prejudices and thoughts.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
