I have a problem. It’s an actual addiction. I don't know what to do?
I’m obsessed with the bee lens on Snapchat.
If you’re not familiar with Snapchat, it is an app where you can send pictures and videos to your friends that last for only a few seconds and then vanish forever. You can choose who you send your snapchats to unless you post it in your story. A snapchat story goes to all your friends and lasts for 24 hours, unless you delete it before then. On snapchat, you can use optional filters to enhance your photo, post the time/date/weather, or geotags which say your location in fancy fonts or landmarks of that area.
While all this seemed exciting enough, last September, Snapchat added a new feature called lenses.
**DISCLAIMER: This article includes embarrassing pictures and videos of me**
Snapchat lenses can be used by pressing and holding the image of your face on the screen. Upon performing this action, about twenty various lenses will appear that distort one’s face, makes them into an animal, or change one’s voice. However, these lenses change every day. One day, you could have a really big mouth and the next day you could be a puppy. Or maybe you’ll even be a unicorn that throws up rainbows! That’s right, there’s one that makes you throw up rainbows. There is even one that makes you look prettier called, the beautify lens (I'm ashamed to say that bought this one for $0.99). Most of the lenses also make you do something to activate each one. For example, if you want to make a waterfall of tears come out of your eyes, you need to raise your eyebrows. And have I mentioned face swaps!?
Here is a collection of snapchats I took of my friends and I using lenses.
This summer, snapchat debuted a new lens: the bee! The bee makes you look like an absolutely adorable bee, like super cute, and the best part is that it changes your voice! I first discovered this lens while I was studying abroad in Ireland. My friends and I used this lens a lot, especially when we were out at pubs. When I came home from Ireland, I didn't use the bee as much until the week before school started. I work at the student union at school and we had to go a week earlier for training. During this training week, I rediscovered my love for the bee lens.
None of my roommates had moved in yet so I was super bored when I wasn't hanging out with my coworkers. What did I do to pass the time? I didn't clean my room or decorate my apartment, I listened to music from the 2000's, took videos with the bee lens, and sent a million snaps to my friends.
I think the bee is absolutely hilarious, especially because it is a voice changer! I grew up surrounded by music and consider myself a good singer, so one of my favorite pass times is to sing in my actual singing voice while using the lens. I love hearing Beyoncé’s runs or Leona Lewis’ crazy high notes in a squeaky little bee voice. The lens literally sounds like the songs are an octave higher than the original.
And I especially love using the lens to those oldies our generation grew up with.
Since the immense popularity of the bee lens, Snapchat came out with more voice changing lenses. These include the duck, the deer, and the 70 year-old man. One night, I spent too much time singing the whole song of "Let It Go" from Frozen while looking like a deer. Mind you, Snapchat videos only last for ten seconds, so this took a while.
I first realized I had a problem when my friends would come up to me saying, "OMG, everyday I look forward to your bee post in your story!" And especially when my sister said, "I'm so over the bee snaps. They're annoying, don't send me anymore." But the moment I realized how bad it was, was the day I freaked out because I thought Snapchat got rid of this lens.
I have since calmed down and don't use the bee lens as much as I used to. However, my love for this lens will never die and you can expect to see a singing bee in my story from time to time.
