Waking up to the news that Donald Trump had won the Presidential Elections was shocking. I remember deciding to go to sleep before the results were in because I was certain that even though the numbers weren't in Hillary Clinton's favor at the moment, things would eventually turn out. That didn't happen though, the truth was far from it. I woke up and was met with different social media platforms that announced the victory Donald Trump had over Hillary Clinton. The news shocked me, shocked me again, and then shocked me some more. It wasn't something that was easy to take in and it's something that's been on my mind since the time I saw the results.
Today, I watched a soccer game between Mexico and the United States. Ordinarily, I would just sit along with my family and wait for either side to make a goal in order to keep the game interesting. However, in the light of the 2016 Presidential Elections, the game felt more like a war. I felt myself desiring a win from Mexico far more than in other past games; I felt there was something that had to be proven by winning that game. When the Mexico team won the game the first thought that came to mind wasn't "Congratulations, Mexico!" it was "Take that, America."
I stood divided.
When I expressed some of my bitter sentiment towards Donald Trump winning the election to some people, I was largely met with "He can't actually do everything he said he was going to do." This is something I think a lot of people who say they are fearful for the presidency of Trump are met with. In the defense of that belief, I'd like to say, that at least for me, the fear isn't in Donald Trump himself and what he can do policy-wise, but it's in the wave of energy he's unleashed in the people of this country.
Donald Trump may not be able to do half of the things on his agenda, but the fact that such vulgar, unsympathetic, and disrespectful words and actions were seemingly overlooked worries me. If our country has a leader who possesses such mentalities and actions, how can the aim possibly be to make America great again?
In the upcoming four years of Donald Trump's presidency may not show concrete evidence of the blunt rhetoric used during his debate, but the fact is that the day of the results the public acted out on the results. Our country began to divide itself. Looking at the election results and how close the election was to being a 50/50 made me realize how much division would come in the upcoming days. On the news, we're hearing of protests, the internet, and social media are filled with petitions to overthrow the electoral college, there are talks of impeaching Donald Trump, and the evidence of division continues and continues.
Our country is in a vulnerable state right now. We're split between accepting or denying Donald Trump as our future president. I must be honest and say that Donald Trump's victory over Hillary Clinton is something that I yet can't accept. It's not a matter of me being upset because Hillary Clinton lost, but rather than a man with the rhetoric that Donald Trump employed during his campaign managed to become the representative of our country.
It is too early to determine what path our country will follow or how much success or failure we'll encounter. Stand by Donald Trump, or don't. We are each entitled to have that opinion. There are many things left to be done and only time will tell what's going to happen to the nation and to the public. Whatever your position may be, just remember that there's great importance in always keeping yourself informed of what goes on in our country. As for me, I cannot yet accept it. He is not my President, not yet.
