Has The Concept Of 'Reimagined' Disney Princesses Gone Too Far?

Recently, I feel as though every time I check social media, I see some repost of “reimagined Disney Princesses.” Someone gifted in graphic design has altered some image of the classic Disney Princesses, changing their look and changing the story. While I understand the thought behind this phenomenon, in my opinion it has gone too far. The princesses are each so uniquely different, representing so many different cultures and places. They all have their own unique look for a reason. Changing a princess’ gender or skin color changes the entirety of her story, and while I appreciate the artistic ability and creativity behind the projects, I think they need to stop.

For example, here are some of the Disney Princesses as mermaids. While the designs are impressive, this one bothers me because being a mermaid is Ariel’s thing. Doing this is like reimagining every princess as a samurai warrior posing as a man.

See more examples of Disney Princesses re-imagined as mermaids here.

I have also seen different versions of various Disney Princes and Princesses reimagined as the other gender. An interesting concept visually, but it completely changes the story.

Here is one artist's take on the concept:

See more gender-bent Disney characters here.

Another example I've seen is Disney Princesses who have been aged about sixty years. Not exactly what my vision was for happily-ever-after.

You can see the rest here. Some princesses apparently age better than others.

Arguably one of the most controversial examples of reimagined Disney Princesses is this one, showing what each of the Princesses would look like if they were a different ethnicity. This one bothers me because the princesses are so diverse, and their appearance and attire reflects the area in which their story takes place.

"Disney Princesses without makeup" really confuses me. How do you know that isn't the natural color of Pocahontas' lips? Why did you take everyone's eyelashes completely away? What happened to Snow White's eyebrows??

Terrifying. Just terrifying. "Use the slider to magically wipe off their makeup" here.

The only one I’m really a fan of: Donald Trump as various Disney Princesses.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
