Hard Work Vs. Faith

All throughout life, we encounter numerous different ideologies. Everyone has their own opinion of what's right and how one should live their life. Many times we even find that some ideologies seem to contradict one another. The particular ones I'm referring to are the "Work for it" vs. "Wait for it" theories of living. When you compare both of these side by side, it looks like they are absolute opposites of one another. They require you to act in completely different ways in order to get what you want. However, it wasn't until recently that I've found that you can and should incorporate both into your life.

The first idea is that if you want something, you have to work for it. This is the one theory that I've followed almost all of my life. From a very young age, I was taught that hard work, discipline and unwavering persistence will always get you to your goals. For my entire life, if I really wanted something, I would put all my time and effort into it until I got the desired result. It's something I've always practiced and I will continue to practice for the rest of my life.

There truly is no greater force on earth than human determination.

With this mindset, I've always looked down on the theory that good things come to those who wait. I've always thought it sounded like an easy way out that lazy individuals use. Why sit there and pray for something instead of actively trying to get it yourself? Through my experiences, however, I found that life doesn't always work the way you think it should. (Who would've thought?). Instead, sometimes things are simply out of your control and there's nothing you can do to affect the outcome.

Life is filled with uncertainty, both good and bad. At times, you may feel like the world is collapsing in on you. You feel helpless as life continues to put you through hardships that you have absolutely no control over. You do everything in your power to change things, but nothing seems to let up. Life will constantly test you like this and even occasionally drag you through hell. Without warning it can crush you, break you down, and tear you apart for no reason whatsoever.

It's in times like these where I've learned that patience and faith are just as important as work ethic. Regardless of what your belief system entails, you've all seen that life is full of twists and turns of good and bad. Having faith that things will get better is something I've found to be vital to making it through this world. Good things really do come to those who wait. If you're going through a hard time right now, know that there's always a light at the end of the tunnel. Have faith that good things will come to you when it's time and sometimes, you just have to be patient.

Both of these ideologies, despite being polar opposites of one another, should be practiced in your everyday life. There's no need to choose one over the other. They are equally important to live out. In summation, do everything you can to go after what you want and when you can't do it anymore, have faith that the good will come to you.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
