The Power of Pure Happiness

Life is about the simple things. It's the little things that make us smile.

The Power of Pure Happiness
Kristen DePalma

If you’ve ever seen the television show The Middle than you know from a very determined Sue Heck that Happiness is contagious. So I figured I would follow in Sue’s footstep and spread around a little love. Here is a list of everything that fills me with joy since in the wise words of Maria Von Trapp: “When I'm feeling sad, I simply remember, My favourite things! And then I don't feel so bad!"

1. Stars

There is nothing more relaxing than looking up on a clear night to see thousands and thousands of tiny balls of light shining back at you.

2. The smell of a new book

Not a lot of people are aware that they are missing out a wonderful thing besides the journey the book takes you through. The smell of a fresh book is calming.

3. Pen on Paper

In a world filled with technology I love the simple science of seeing ink fly across paper simply because I am pressing my hand on a pen

4. Car rides

I love long car rides. However, everything about car rides (long or short) is wonderful. Driving while there’s a sunset, driving with the windows down, driving with loud music, the list is endless.

5. Christmas Decorations

There’s something about seeing the first sign of Christmas that makes me smile. It just fills me with joy knowing the happiest time of the year is coming.

6. Coffee in the Morning

Not only is this an essential to make it through the day, but sitting down in the morning and drinking a cup of coffee is quite relaxing.

7. Cuddling with a pet

Maybe it’s just me, but when I use to have a long day I could not wait to go home and cuddle up next to my dog. He would just lay there enjoying the company while I rambled on and on about my dilemma of the day.

8. Listening to an old favorite song

We all have those songs that will never get old to us. I know every word to Sk8r Boy by Avril Lavigne and Drift Away by Uncle Kracker, and you can beat I’m jamming on the top of my lungs when they come on.

9. Wawa

Now I know most people don’t understand my love (more like obsession) with Wawa but I honestly love this food. Have you ever tried the Quesadillas? Or mac-n-cheese? The BBQ Chicken hoagie? The list is infinite! If I’m having a bad day and you bring me Wawa there is 100 percent chance that my day just brightened up.

10. The first snow

I absolutely love the first snow. I love snow in general, but there is something just so special and magical about the first snow of the season.

These are just a couple of my favorite things that will always put a smile on my face. The world would be a better place if we all just shared some happiness.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
