As a person who has depended on others for a lot over the years, trust me when I say you can not depend on others for your own happiness. This was one of those lessons I had to learn the hard way but nonetheless, helpful in the long run.
You can not place your happiness in the hands of others. There are two reasons why doing so becomes problematic. If you do so you are not only giving someone else sole power of making you happy but they then also have the ability to take that happiness away. Following that, since when did we decide it was a good idea to let someone else decide our mood? I know we don't do this intentionally, but even I find myself frequently guilty of it.
This all got me thinking. I wake up in the morning and choose what to have for breakfast, choose what I'm going to wear for the day and the list continues. So, I thought why can't I wake up and choose to be happy?
That's when I realized, there is nothing at all stopping me from deciding to be happy. This means there's nothing stopping you from being happy either. It's time to stop caring about irrelevant people and things that we can not change.
Forget about the professor who gave you a bad grade.
Forget the idiot driver who cut you off earlier.
Forget the asshole guy who didn't text you back last night.
Forget about the friend who you got in an argument with.
Temporarily forget anyone or anything that alters your mood for the worst even in the slightest bit. Take all the negative energy and just put it out of your mind.
Sometimes it's necessary to be selfish and this just so happens to be one of those times. No matter what may happen in the course of a day, take a breath and realize that there is so much around you worth being happy about. We need to start realizing that no one can make us happy. Others can only add or detract but we create our own happiness.
"You deserve to be happy. You deserve to live a life you are excited about. Don't ever let others make you forget that."
