This year was my first experience with Universal's Halloween Horror Nights and let's just say, I was pretty terrified.
I spent a good portion of my childhood vacations in Florida mostly going to Disney. It was pretty much a staple in my family. I think in all the years we came down to visit, only once did we go to Universal. I remember thinking it was cool but still remained certain that nothing could top Disney World.
To set the record straight, that's still true, but my love for Universal grew bigger this weekend. I've never been much of a ride person, I guess the thrill seeker gene skipped me, plus my motion sickness is really real. I guess that's what always kept me from wanting to spend money going to Universal when I could spend the same to go on a vomit free ride like 'It's a Small World.'
My boyfriend and I however, are HUGE horror fans and have talked about going to Halloween Horror Nights on multiple occasions, especially in years when they announce houses that peak our interests.
While I had always heard awesome things about HHN, I could never imagine it being worth taking a trip from New York just to attend. So this year felt like the perfect opportunity seeing as I'm a Florida resident now (407 whaddup?). I convinced my boyfriend to fly down and visit, and off we went to Universal.
Actually, we picked up tickets at Publix first because they were way cheaper and I love any excuse to go to Publix.
I was pretty excited about this year's lineup as I am a huge fan of both "The Shining" and "Ash vs the Evil Dead" and it is super safe to say, neither house was a disappointment. The ambiance throughout the park was really what sold me though.
I wasn't a huge fan of the "American Horror Story" house and would probably vote it my least favorite. I recommend the Dead Waters house even though I had no clue what it was going in, it was supremely creepy.
There were too many times a person was too busy texting to notice the 6 foot guy with a chainsaw walking behind them, until they did and screamed for dear life. And yeah, maybe that was me more than once.
I think the best part and what made it most enjoyable was the time I chose to go. I've heard horror stories about 3 hours lines, waiting all night to only get into one house. I'm happy to say, that wasn't my experience at all! We actually got to go through every house, stop for food and I got a good 10 minutes after walking out of each house to freak out sufficiently.
And I didn't even have to buy the express pass!
I would recommend to any newbie like me to get over there before it gets too close to the holiday. It was awesome but I can see myself having a horrible time waiting on crazy lines and not even getting to do much. Or maybe don't do that so there are shorter lines for me!
