Let's face it: after the age of 13 or 14, the craftsmanship and creativity in making a Halloween costume kind of deteriorates. The enthusiasm of having the coolest ensemble certainly ends and we resort to the generic costumes that we all want to avoid but always succumb to. At my age, it's mostly just "slutty nurse" or "slutty cop" often accompanied by "Jason Voorhees" or "that guy from scream." I must say, as much as I love to participate in the "one night a year where a girl can dress like a total slut and no one can say anything about it," I do think that the typicality of it all does take away from the innate uniqueness that comes with the holiday. When I was younger, I loved Halloween movies: scary, funny, even disney channel style (actually, specifically disney channel style... don't judge). I mean, Halloween really is the only time of year where we can let our freak flag fly (well, the only night when it is socially acceptable). Why would we ever want to let that go to waste? Let's learn to re-celebrate Halloween, people! Gotta start somewhere. I'm gonna share with you my favorite Halloween movies, costumes, and other novelties that will surely get you in the ghostly spirit!
Top 3 Favorite Halloween Movies
1) HALLOWEENTOWN TRILOGY.
Halloweentown, Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge, and Halloweentown High. If you did not take the journey to Halloweentown with Marnie and Aggie circa 2000 then you did not live. That movie monumentally changed my life; it led to my obsession with witches and the consequential 4 year streak when I dressed as the good witch from Greenwich county.... Don't judge.
2) Hocus Pocus.
This horror-comedy features some of our parents' favorite actresses: Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, etc. It was directed by Kenny Ortega, also famous director of the High School Musical series... so it is obviously fabulous. If this guy created the high school heart-throb that is Troy Bolton, then I trust that he is pretty damn capable.
3) Halloween.
This one is a classic horror movie, an oldie-but-goodie. Although the acting, special effects, transitions, score, and basically everything would be considered sub-par in modern-day criticism, this movie is still one of the best Halloween movies of all time. And it still makes a good statement about the severity of creepy stalkers that is still as relevant today as it was 40 years ago. Whether it be the Craigslist killer, a creepy tinder match, or an ex-institutionalized child murderer... you can never be too careful.
Three Creative, Yet Sexy Halloween Costumes for Girls
1) Kim Possible.
Throw on a black long-sleeve crop top and some cargo pants and you're good to go. Match it with some heeled combat boots and be ready to call out "So what's the sitch?" at all times.
2) A beer can.
I know that this sounds silly, but with some craftsmanship it looks awesome! First, wrap yourself in saran wrap and then use colored duct tape to wrap yourself up like a skin tight tube-top dress. So, if you're going to be Budweiser, for example, you only need blue and silver duct tape. And then, you print out the label and put it on you... This also works for other things such as a red solo cup (red and white tape), a disco ball (silver tape and cover yourself in christmas lights), etc.
3) Where's Waldo?
Put on a red and white striped crop top, some black spandex, a red and white winter hat, and some round glasses! Easy peasy. Don't forget the red lipstick!
Three Creative, Yet Sexy Halloween Costumes for Guys
1) Boxer.
Go shirtless! Grab a silk robe, some basketball shorts and some gloves! Girls love a shirtless guy and the manliness of an aggressive boxer.
2) Gru.
This might come as a shock because a villain from a Disney-Pixar movie does not exactly scream "Sexy!" However, if you go shirtless with some jeans and only a grey and black scarf and carry a stuffed minion, you'll be the hit of the party!
3) Shrek.
Again, go shirtless (surprise, surprise) and throw on a brown vest that you could honestly probably make if you had to. Add a brown belt and some green ears and you're good.
