Right now, gun control is a huge issue in the U.S. After the Orlando shooting, and the Congress sit-in for more gun regulations, many people are speaking out about the issue.
Yes, I want there to be gun reform, but I'm not trying to take your guns away. I'm all for the 2nd Amendment. It was created for a reason, and I think people have the right to protect themselves. However, I think there need to be stricter regulations so that shootings like what happened in Orlando, San Bernardino, and Sandy Hook don't continue to happen. We are the only country in the world that believes having more guns would help the problem better than having gun restrictions. Before I have someone say "criminals are criminals," yes, I know that. I still think criminals will still be able to get ahold of guns, but not as easily.
Here's what I would like to see happen.
Stricter background checks.
I think we should have stricter background checks and make it the same in each state. Different states have different gun laws and loopholes around getting guns. We need to check for criminal records, FBI flags, no-fly lists, and mental health records. Yes, this is going to be personal, but it's ultimately to protect you. The Orlando shooter was flagged by the FBI twice, and was still able to purchase a gun, and that shouldn't have happened.
Background checks at gun shows.
If people want to attend gun shows, go for it. If they're able to purchase guns there, they should have to go through a background check just like any other gun shop.
Assault rifles shouldn't be sold.
I don't care if it's for hunting, or whatever, I don't think assault rifles need to be sold. There's plenty of other guns that you can use to protect you or use for hunting.
Gun education.
I think there needs to be more education on guns, as well. If you have a gun in your home, and small children, keep it out of their hands and some place they can't get to it. Obviously, children know guns are dangerous, but I think there needs to be more education from families and schools.
Also, if someone purchases a gun, I think they should go through a class to make sure they properly know how to use it, and all of the risks in having one. From 2005 to 2010, almost 3,800 people in the U.S. died from unintentional shootings. More than a third of the victims were under 25 years of age. This is probably because these household guns were not locked away from children, and they didn't know how to handle them properly.
I want these regulations so these mass shootings and tragedy can end, and that gun shop owners, who follow these guidelines will be protected even if someone decides to use their products wrongfully. I may be a liberal, but trust me when I say, no one wants to take your guns away.
