Gun Control Or People Control?

What side are you on?

Gun Control Or People Control?
Cigar City Comedy

As the aftermath of a mass shooting settles in, the cries for gun control can be heard all over the country. We have one half of the country calling for gun control and more restrictions on the ability to buy one, and we have the other half rallying around the “people control” idea. But what exactly is the people control idea and what would it entail for the fight against terrorism inside of the United States?

Living in a house with a conservative who believes in their Second Amendment right, I hear a lot about guns and how we should continue to act on these rights until Obama tears our guns away (Thanks, Obama). Me on the other hand, well I believe in our Second Amendment right but on another level. But that’s another story and another fight with my family.

I hear a lot about the people control side of the fight, and it’s a valid fight. The people control focuses on “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” These people believe that instead of gun control, we should control the people who can buy these weapons. And that is not limited to those who are mentally ill. Yes, there is a fight that those who are mentally ill should not be able to buy guns, and I can understand that fight because of people like Adam Lanza, who killed 26 innocent children and teachers at Sandy Hook in 2012. Aside from the mentally ill, there is also a push to limit the sale of guns to any and all minorities because of the chance that they believe in something that most Americans cannot wrap their minds around.

This is where I start to draw my invisible mental line. Who are we, as a country which is made up of immigrants, to tell other minorities that just because of who they are, they cannot buy a gun? I do understand that there are some sick people out there, but profiling all minorities because of those few bad people is just unacceptable.

I do believe we should have background checks, and there should be restrictions to some people on the sales of guns, but gun control will be the better option nationwide. Controlling when and how guns are sold is something that should have been done a long time ago. One should not be able to buy a gun in Virginia without a permit or background check. One can simply walk into a Virginia gun shop and walk out with a gun, same day. There is the problem.

Everyone should be checked; everyone should have to have a permit or license to buy a gun. I understand guns don’t kill people and people truly do kill other people, but there needs to be some reform here. I’m not saying my side of the fight is right, and I’ll leave you to your own opinions, but take a good look at our country and think about what will be best for your children, and their children, and their children in the future.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
