November is a month that many look forward to throughout the year. People get pumped up about Thanksgiving and about how much closer we are to Christmas. However, coffee lovers (like myself) get excited for another reason —the return of the famous 'Starbucks Red Cup' AKA their holiday cup.
There's nothing like going to your local Starbucks, ordering your favorite Christmas holiday drink and getting that red cup with your name on it. Starbucks lovers wait in anticipation for what the new holiday cup will look like, and regardless of the design of the cup, the color of the cup is red. However, this year Starbucks has surprised us with a new PR strategy: green cups.
I know some of you may be thinking, “It’s just a cup,” which yes that is true, but if you're a lover of all things Starbucks, the season of the red cup is something you wait 11 months for. November 1 is a big day, and this year November 1 came with the addition of the holiday drinks and new green cup that holds political meaning.
The new cup features a mosaic illustrated by Shogo Ota of more than a hundred people connected by a continuous line, highlighting the relationship between a coffee farmer, a barista, a family and friends embracing. This mosaic is a symbol of unity and connection in this crazy pre-election political time.
According to Howard Schultz, chairman and CEO of Starbucks, “The green cup and the design represent the connections Starbucks has as a community with its partners (employees) and customers. During a divisive time in our county, Starbucks wanted to create a symbol of unity as a reminder of our shared values, and the need to be good to each other.”
While the green color of the cup has caused some uproar among Starbucks drinkers, what's even more eye raising is the timing of the cup's release. Monday, November 1st is exactly one week away from Election Day.
The Atlantic's Megan Garber wrote in her article, that Starbucks "just put, essentially, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton on its cups. It brought politics into the holiday season — in the guise, of course, of transcending politics during this holiday season."
Starbucks goers have been posting their thoughts about the new cup on social media, and there are many mixed reviews. Many individuals made it a point to state that freaking out about the Starbucks cups wasn't worth it in the end.
As long as a cup does it's job (containing the hot coffee) why complain? People these days get hot and bothered about anything these days. #Starbucks

So wait is everybody freaking out about the #starbucks cups yet? It's been awhile since we've had a good freakout over something stupid.

If you are getting worked up about cups at #starbucks, you should probably refrain from making any big decisions in the next week or so.

No worries for those of you who are patiently waiting for the red cup to make its appearance. Rumor has it that the red cups are going to be coming back around mid-November, and a sneak-peak of the cups was actually leaked by a Reddit user named DasUberSquid. The post has a picture of the new red cups, which features a bird and holly leaves, with the title "I peeked."
Despite this leak, many Starbucks stores have already received their boxes full of the new holiday cups with the label "No peeking until November 10." However, on Wednesday, November 3, Starbucks released a sneak peak of their whole holiday collection on their website.
So for all you Starbucks lovers out there, don't worry the red cup is making its appearance this year, and their green cup is cool in that it depicts that unity we all need around this time of the year. Go grab one of your favorite holiday Starbucks drinks and enjoy that new cup!
