So it's that time of year again. The time of year that every college girl lives for: recruitment, or better known as "rush." Now we have all heard the good, the bad and the ugly about fraternities and sororities. Most people would identify the "typical" sorority as a group of selfish girls who just like to go out, get belligerently drunk and pay a ridiculous amount of money for their friends but in my case, I would beg to differ. Going Greek is so much more than that and I genuinely believe that every single girl going into college will benefit from joining an organization where she can become a part of something much bigger than herself.
Often times most people might perceive the typical "sorority" girl as one who is "not educated" or "not that smart." Within my chapter I have found that this is the furthest thing from true. Academic Interest is one of the top five membership standards within my organization and over the past year this has motivated and pushed me to become more dedicated to my future endeavors and my major. Going into a sorority, I knew that being an intelligent young woman was very important. However, I never imagined it would push me to take my future 10 times more serious than I did last year. Of course school is important and all and of course, we think we have the rest of our lives to figure it out but the fact of it is this: if you can't take it serious now, when will you ever make that decision to take it seriously?
Going Greek is the best decision you could ever make during your four years at school because it allows you to gain leadership opportunities you may have never had before. There is always a door open for a leadership regardless of it is helping with philanthropy, helping plan recruitment, setting up fun events for the chapter and even volunteering at different places that support our philanthropy. When I decided to take a step out of my comfort zone and take on a leadership role, I found a passion for things I never would have imagined before. I found it easier to get to know other girls, I found myself feeling as if I was more important and my self worth skyrocketed, I found myself wanting to truly dig deep into what made others passionate and inspire them to want to be better in their lives.
Once I went through formal recruitment and found my home away from home I became inspired by the group of woman I chose to surround myself with everyday and allowed myself to grow with. This past year within my Greek organization it has truly empowered me to put the missing pieces of myself together and persevere through my struggles with anxiety. I feel like it is vital to have individuals in your life who strive everyday to support you, lift you up, love you unconditionally and inspire you to truly be a better you. I mean, seriously, I never in a million years would have imagined myself falling in love with 150-plus girls and I know it sounds crazy but they inspire me that much to be a better person every single day of my life. Going Greek is the best decision I have ever made within my college career and I can only hope that every girl going through recruitment this year finds their true happiness within a sorority that will definitely change their life for the better. You have to understand here, it's not just for four years, it's for life.
