College is a big transition for any student. No matter how old you are, each passing school year brings about different challenges and expectations. However, joining Greek life has brought me to the realization that I am never without family to face these obstacles with.
Greek family brings about older sisters, younger sisters, twins, aunts, uncles, brothers, cousins, you name it — they’re all there in one giant family. They’ve struggled through the same classes before, or are struggling along with you now, and are the best sources for comfort and advice while away at school.
Greek brothers and sisters each come with their own set of perks.
For a girl who was unsure about joining Greek life, my sorority sisters, and my Big-Little family within my sorority, have been the greatest aspect of going Greek.
Sisters:
- Mean always having someone to talk to in the kitchen after a long night or lazy morning.
- They’re always ready for a dance party, particularly when it features crazy dress up.
- Can communicate with just a glance or simply a nod of the head.
- Are always available to binge on Netflix and nap.
- Give the best advice, the best hugs and have the best clothes to borrow.
Sisters, Big/Little or family, they are all more than just labels. They should never be forced relationships, because these are your best friends, the relationships you will carry with you for the rest of your life. They are the people you call each night to share stories with and make plans with because you want and need to see them, not because you have been labeled “sister” or “big” and “little.” You go above and beyond for each other because they are your best friends. Family does not only last a timeline of four years, it is forever.
Joining a sorority and having a Greek family also provides the opportunity to gain Greek brothers. When a big sister chooses a Greek big brother for her little sister, the family expands to even greater lengths. One may be away at school, but the extension of this family provides them with the opportunity to meet so many members of their community, always feeling surrounded by a support system and a family.
Big Brothers bring different value to a Greek family than sisters do:
- Greek Big Brothers become like true older brothers, and will always look out for you.
- They are always someone to hang out with, study with and get boy advice from.
- Brothers can be the best wingmen and ways to meet more friends around campus.
- You can always count on them to make sure you and the rest of your family are having fun.
- There is never any drama with your brothers.
Greek life takes away the homesickness I have often felt. My Greek family has often filled the void we all feel after a long time away from home. They have made my college experience amazing and have become a true second family.
