Before going into college, if you would have told me that I was going to be a part of a sorority, I would have laughed in your face. The idea wasn’t plausible to me. But here I am, writing these words in my double stitch with the roof of a sorority house over my head and songs that are plastered into my mind for all eternity. I couldn’t be more proud to share why it’s great to be a part of the sorority life at my university.
Without the sisterhood that my sorority has shown me, which is the key factor of what drew me to them, my college experience would have taken a complete 180 and not in the good way. These sisters carry more than just their motto brought by our founders, but they hold themselves to such a high standard. Even though every sister is incredibly unique and into their own different things such as majors and various clubs, you automatically feel a sense of true connections with one another. You find your people, your role models in your family that you receive from your big sister, the people you need to call at 2 a.m. to make cookies and have pick-me-ups when you feel like you can’t go on with the world some days because of boys and tests.
Sorority life helps keeps you anchored. They make you appreciate all that life has to offer and give you incredible experiences you might not have been able to have anywhere else. The door is opened with opportunities that surround your career path, getting involved and to always think there is more to do to benefit yourself, your sisters and your school. You realize through your philanthropy that you are a part of something bigger than yourself and that your decisions in anything reflect the foundation and the sorority as a whole. You come to realize you’re more involved and have a presence on campus that reflects a more willing commitment to join in on different leadership opportunities to help benefit you in the long run.
Don’t get me wrong, the socials and themed parties are definitely a good highlight of the Greek atmosphere, but those only play a small part in what Greek life in general has to offer. You really do find your bridesmaids, your lifelong connections with current chapter members and alumni, as well as networking to help you in the business aspect of the world. They hold high values that help to develop character and friendships with people even outside of your chapter and into other sororities and fraternities.
You find your home. When you go through the process of recruitment, you begin to realize where that home truly is and once graduation rolls around, how you will never want to leave and have that word, “Alumni” in front of your name whenever you come back. But even once you do leave, and it’s 10 years later down the road, you know you will always be welcomed back with open arms into that sorority, and you will always have a sense of belonging with one of the best things you could be a part of for the rest of your life. My sisters are for eternity. I could scream of happiness to everyone I meet that I love what I’m in, and I’ll never think otherwise.
