For every Cubs fan in the world, Wednesday November 2, 2016 will be the greatest day in history.
Because how often does a streak 108 years long get broken?
Being born and raised a Cub fan and having the family members who brought you up that way, telling you the team was going to win next year and the year after that, but the day kept getting out of reach. Then time flies by and suddenly they have passed on and you're left to pick up the pieces and carry on their tradition and love for a team you both (and many before them) shared. My great-grandma Sands (Dorothy) was one of those people.
She was a life-long Cubs fan. And even in her later years she would always keep tabs on her beloved Cubbies. During her later years and struggle with alzheimer's, she would always check the score and swear and curse up a storm during the games they were losing. It was quite comical to be honest.
Dorothy and I shared some special things, our birthdays were a day apart and our passion for our Cubbies was unmatched. She also brought licorice to share at whatever event she attended. Whether it was birthday parties or holiday gatherings with our multiplying family, she always tossed the licorice on the table in my grandma Kutsch's kitchen (where all the gatherings were).
We always had our gatherings at my grandma Kutsch's house because Dorothy was in and out of old folks' homes and apartments for many years. When she passed, I lost something special with her. We never got to share the moment when they finally won the World Series. But I did get to share it with some close friends and family who made the experience that much more memorable.
November 20th, 2016 would have been her 100th birthday.
So I think I owe her a visit.
