This is it: the last few days of classes, the start of finals, the final full week before we say goodbye to our favorite place on earth for the summer, and for some, forever. There's a common saying, "We didn't know we were making memories, we were just having fun," many use to describe some of the most memorable times of their lives.
I don't buy it.
I knew I was making memories sitting in my dorm room at 2 A.M. with my friends eating pizza and watching "Grey's." I knew I was making memories running to Walmart endless times a week and buying the most random items. I knew I was making memories every weekend, both during the the day and the night.
I remember being terrified to go to college and being upset I had to leave my friends; nobody told me how hard it was going to be saying goodbye for the long, three months of summer.
I never imagined I would become attached to my little dorm room, which became the home of so many memories, fights, cuddle sessions, mac and cheese parties, venting sessions, and endless mid-day naps.
There were times I didn't think I would be able to make it, like Christmas training and training trip during swim season and finals week. There were moments I wanted to last forever, like A10s, the week after A10s, spring weekend, and Halloween. There were moments I laughed until I cried and times others laughed at me until they cried -- what can I say, I get really emotional when I'm hypnotized! There were times I cried, like when we lost our coach and relationships ended, but if anything these moments, along with college as a whole, has made me a stronger person.
Thinking back to the beginning of the year, although it just seems like yesterday, so much has changed. Friends (and boys) have come and gone throughout the year, both from back home and here at college. But there's always been that core few that have been there through it all. Our camera rolls are full of so many pictures that bring back amazing nights and memories it almost chokes you up a bit. My walls are lined with pictures and memorabilia highlighting my favorite moments of the year.
The idea of being apart from my friends, who I'm used to seeing at a moments notice and a 30-second walk, makes me more sad than I've ever been in my life. Each take a small piece of my heart with them.
It won't be the same waking up every morning and dragging my feet over to the Hickey for the delicious omelette, which is normally the only thing I get out of bed that early for. It won't be the same not eating family style meals, every meal, with my new family and discussing the funny and unfortunate events that happen to us during the day. It won't be the same having the live with boys again. Sorry, brothers; I enjoy living with girls better. Not to mention my defined calves will diminish due to the lack of walking I will do at home -- any exercise is better than no exercise, am I right?
So goodbye to undoubtedly the best year of my life so far. Goodbye to my friends, my room, my team, my favorite place on earth. Don't worry, Bonas. This isn't goodbye forever. It's a see you later, and you can bet I'll be counting down the days until I'm back.
