Goodbye Halloween, Hello Christmas

Halloween is over, now let's get to the good part

Yes, Halloween is one of the best holidays.

There’s something about drinking hot cider and watching Hocus Pocus that really puts everyone in a great mood. You get to carve pumpkins, listen to Monster Mash on repeat, and dress up - what’s not to love? Everyone gets to show their creative, or maybe slutty, side with fun costumes, and I’m pretty sure 90% of girls have had their outfit picked out since last Halloween. It’s no doubt one of the best holidays, but now that it’s over, let’s talk about something even better…

CHRISTMAS.

Now that Halloween is over, it is socially acceptable to listen to Christmas music. I plan on blasting the Mariah Carey Christmas album in my dorm room for the next eight weeks, and no one can stop me. Well, except maybe my RA, but that’s beside the point. I’m going to sit in my dorm every day in warm sweaters and fuzzy socks and drink hot chocolate, because it’s Christmas season, guys. It’s what you do.

If you can’t tell already, I love Christmas. I love snow and twinkling lights and hot chocolate and candy canes. I love decorating a tree with my family and putting up Christmas decorations. And the best part? Christmas movies. If the movie Elf isn’t on your list of your top 10 favorite movies, you’re lying to yourself.

And, obviously, I love getting presents. But the weirdest thing I’ve noticed in the past couple of years is that I love giving gifts more than getting them. I know, right?

Crazy stuff. Last year, I was so excited to give my dad his gift that I almost told him what it was ahead of time because I couldn’t wait for him to open it. Honestly, finding the perfect gift for someone is the best feeling. I’ve had gifts picked out for most of my family since like August, because that’s how excited I am (but no spoilers because they’ll probably read this).

But on a real note, Christmas is the best holiday because you get to hang out with your family. And I know it sounds dumb, but now that I’m in college, it’s weird not seeing my parents every day. I actually miss them, which surprised me more than anything. I’m sure I’ll regret saying that when I’m home with them for a month over Christmas break, but right now I’m excited to spend the holidays at home. I mean, who else can I force to watch Christmas movies with me every day?

Now that it’s the beginning of Christmas season, let’s all celebrate by watching Elf and getting ready for the holidays! And if you say you don't like Christmas, you sit on a throne of lies.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
