It's Good To Be Back On The Court

It had been too long since I wore a uniform, too long since I did my silly superstitious pre-game rituals, too long since I got to enjoy basketball with my teammates. It was like getting a breath of fresh air to be back at.

Nothing beats the squeaking of sneakers on the hardwood or the swish of the ball through the net. I finally got to appreciate it again after a while without it. The end of my high school senior basketball season meant, for the time being, the end of basketball for me at a competitive level. Coming to Penn State meant I made a definitive choice to not play basketball at the highest level anymore. I knew that I would still have an opportunity to play basketball at Penn State if I was good enough to make the club team, but it wouldn't be as competitive as being a student-athlete. I was okay with that and excited to discover myself in other places other than on the basketball court.

Coming onto campus with literally hundreds of clubs for me to chose from I knew of one that I was hoping to become involved in was club basketball because I knew how much I enjoyed the game, and I really missed playing. The club team at Penn State is a middle ground between intramural and the real varsity team. We practice 3 times a week at most and travel a few times a semester to colleges nearby to play in tournaments.

For me, making the team led to a super cool opportunity of being able to travel and finally play basketball again. Sure, between the end of the season and now I had played basketball but the competitive spirit wasn't there as much during the summer. I can tell you there is a difference between just shooting around by yourself or even playing pick up at the IM building, and playing a real game. There was a little empty spot in my heart for that ready to be filled again.

It had been too long since I wore a uniform, too long since I did my silly superstitious pre-game rituals, too long since I got to enjoy basketball with my teammates. It was like getting a breath of fresh air to be back at. Early Sunday morning we traveled a few hours east to the University of Delaware to play three games. I haven't been that excited to wake up at 6:00 A.M. in a while. I knew I was in for a good day. It was a good day, to say the least, and I'm super excited to do it again in our upcoming tournaments.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
