The newspaper industry is a dying business. This has been perpetuated as we have so many other ways to get our news digitally. However, newspaper is here to stay. It survived the inventions of the television and radio.
There will always be a place for the nostalgia a newspaper provides. Sunday comics, historical front page stories. While there still could be some digital lessons needed but overall, there are many reasons people should pick up a newspaper instead of getting their news digitally.
There are some health concerns associated with having too much exposure to bright screens. We can’t forget all the space we can save from not downloading the newspaper apps.
No ads and pay walls
When people have a natural paper in their hand, they can easily look past an advertisement. Read the news and don’t worry about a pay wall asking for credit card information. People have their cards registered with enough things like Apple pay, Netflix and Amazon Prime already. Go ahead pick up the paper.
Computer Vision Syndrome
Also known as CVS, Computer Vision Syndrome is encompassed with a whole range of eyestrain and pain experienced by computer users. Bright screens can hurt your eyes and even cause insomnia. Don’t trash the laptop just yet. Taking time to read a newspaper, gives your eyes a rest. People do enough email checking and Facebook updating all day, therefore looking away from the screen is helpful.
Increased knowledge
Every teacher tells us that reading more would make our research papers sound better. People can increase their vocabulary and overall knowledge just from reading a newspaper. Don’t worry about those desktop notifications or a dimmed screen while trying to read a real news story.
It's the cheapest form of news
Newspapers are fairly cheap and they don’t prevent anyone from reading them. On your cell phone, there still needs to be a service provider. When you are online from a laptop or desktop, again a Wi-Fi connection is needed. These service plans can cost you anywhere from $40-$100. People will always need the Internet, but save a gig and read the news in paper form.
There will always be a threat to how people get their news. Blog sites can sometimes prank out the news, while other sites seem to be biased. A local paper written by local reporters is becoming more popular today, than in recent years. Picking up a paper will always be an American pastime. People don’t haven to worry about a fake story being printed, which is what most blogs do to get views. Because 56 percent the United States reads newspapers exclusively in print, this is proof that it will always look cooler to sit on a bench with a paper in your hand, than with a phone stuck to our hands.
