The tan lines are prevalent, "The Bachelorette" has ended, and you are now getting several emails a day from school reminding you of all the things you should have already done for signing back up, but haven’t even started yet. Here we go again.
It’s now the beginning of August and it’s already time to go back to school. For high schoolers, going back to school means a whole lot of repetition. From the same old long seven hour day of rotating classes to being surrounded by the kids you have grown up with all your life, no one can deny that going through the motions of high school becomes tedious. While high school has a variety of special moments of fun, the anticipation of college is on everyone’s mind. On the other hand, August for a college student can’t roll around fast enough. Going back to college is exponentially better than going back to high school, and here’s why.
1. Independence
What’s a curfew? What are chores? What’s class before 11? What’s getting multiple texts from your parents asking you where you are? For a college student, one of the best parts of going off to school for the first time is the freedom it entails. Do you not want to come home until 3 a.m. from binge-watching “Grey’s Anatomy” and eating “Insomnia” at your best friends place? Sure, in college that’s totally acceptable and normal. You will just have to pay the price in the morning for the Starbucks you'll need (is that even a bad thing though?) to keep yourself awake and alert through your hard 9 a.m. business calculus class.
2. Reuniting with Friends
Yes, you reunite with your friends when school is back in session in high school, but it does not even come close to comparing the kind of reunion that occurs when you get to reunite with your college best friends/sisters, some of whom you haven’t seen in three months. In college, it is nowhere near as convenient as it was in high school having only a 15 minute drive to visit your friends during the summer. More than likely your best friends can live hours, states or even countries away during the summer, leaving you going through serious withdrawals after spending all day, every day together during the semester. Back to school time with friends means back to late night food runs to Eddy’s, and what honestly could be better than that?
3. SEC Football
Do I really need to say any more? High school football has nothing on the electricity that runs through William Brice Stadium on an SEC college game day along with all the fun that college tailgating entails. What’s not to love? T-minus three-ish weeks, y'all!
4. College Nightlife
Having a nightlife during the week in high school is essentially unheard of. In college, on the other hand, it is perfectly acceptable to head out at 10 p.m. on a Thursday night to detox from the stressful day you’ve had. USC has some of the best variety of night life in the nation at Five Points, that is sure to turn your stressful day into a fun night.
5. Concise Classes
Arguably the best part of college is the fact that you only have class three hours a day of class, no pointless classes that just waste your time while you could actually be studying for the important classes you have. There is no required 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. day. Do you want classes starting at noon? Sure, you’ll have your classes for the day knocked out by 3 p.m. The length of a college student's hours of class a day opens up time to study, work, have an internship or even hit the gym, which are all things we were barely able to squeeze in time to do in our busy schedules during high school.
It’s very clear to see why heading back to school for a college student has its perks in comparison to high school students. So kick back, relax, and enjoy the rest of the last few fleeting weeks of your summer before the fun begins.
