The Glass That's Half Full

It's all about perspective.

The Glass That's Half Full
The Last Virtue

Is the glass half full or half empty? We've all heard this question before multiple times, as it's become a popular expression in today's society to determine if someone is optimistic or pessimistic. After this past week, it could be pretty easy for me to view my "glass" as half empty, but instead, I decided to put my own twist on things and view my "glass" as half full.

There are always going to be moments, possibly hours, days, weeks, or even months that are a little rougher than the others, but it's how you handle the hardships that really matters. This past week in particular, it seemed like it was one thing after another that kept testing me, and eventually, I couldn't handle being upset any longer. I knew that while I, unfortunately, couldn't change the cards that I was being dealt, I could change they way I viewed and used my cards to make things better. Instead of focusing my attention on all of the negative things that kept happening, I decided to direct my attention to everything that was a positive in my life.

I'm grateful for my health and to be able to essentially go out and do whatever I want without any restrictions because of it. I'm grateful for the education I received growing up that allowed me to get to where I am today. I'm grateful to be able to attend such an amazing university that focuses on exactly what I want to do and get a great education, while also meeting lots of amazing people and making lots of amazing memories. I'm grateful to have the opportunity to represent my university by playing the sport I love. I'm grateful for my internship and all the crazy (in the best possible way) people I have met through it. I'm grateful for all of those surrounding me who push me to be a better person every single day and see something in me that I don't see quite yet. I'm extremely grateful for my friends who are always there for me, especially when I need them most. And most of all, I'm grateful for my perfectly imperfect family who always supports me and loves me.

The debate of the glass being half full versus half empty is not about what cards you're dealt, but rather about perspective. Next time you're going through a little rough patch, whether it's a moment or a couple of weeks, start directing your attention towards all of the positive things in your life, rather than focusing on the negative. Who knows? Maybe your half empty glass will suddenly become half full.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
