I'm The Girl Who Loves College AND Still Misses High School

College is fun and all, but please take me back to my old gym and football field.

Walking on to a college campus for the first time, your world changes. At first, you might love it or absolutely hate it. Personally, I wasn't a fan at first, but now I could not imagine my life being any different. I have gained so many new friends and have learned so many things I wouldn't have learned otherwise.

Despite the fun times I have had in college, I loved high school so much. I loved the teachers, friends, and the small town my school was in. My entire class in high school was my family, I will always love them, and I knew everyone.

The amazing thing about high school is you see the same people all day, every day. You create friendships with so many more people because you are always seeing each other. You also tend to bond more when surrounded by familiar faces for four years.

The events in high school stay with you forever. I was in almost every club and a band kid. My junior and senior year, I became a majorette. Special occasions like homecoming and prom are the most heartwarming events you will ever have.

You remember seeing your friends in beautiful dresses or looking handsome in their annual tuxedo. You reminisce on cheesy homecoming themes, and the times you answered something stupid in class.

Unfortunately, you come to miss high school so much. You never have to stay up late studying and you have so much more free time even if you are in extracurricular activities. You don't completely live off coffee, and your parents get to cook dinner most nights (or if you are lucky like me, every night).

The worst thing about coming to college is that the underclassmen friends that you had moved on. All through senior year, they tell you how much they will miss you, but they will soon forget you. The cycle never ends. Sadly, it will always be this way, but I promise, better friends are to come.

I also miss my teachers dearly. The band director of my junior year was my best friend, my English teacher was like my sister, and my history teacher was a second mom to me. Teachers in high school care for you so much more than professors and that is just the unfortunate truth.

The things I miss the most about high school are my friends. Nicole, Madison, and Hannah are my rock, my gal pals for life, and doing anything without them is so hard. I love them with all my heart and I love watching them grow up. I know they are going to do amazing things.

With all that being said, I truly do miss high school so much. But I know I have big adventures coming.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
