Besides the academics and the devastatingly attractive student body, one of Georgetown's big draws is its location in the nation's capital. Coming from Fairfax County in Northern Virginia, I thought I already knew everything the DC area had to offer, but in my first two years at Georgetown I learned that the city is a more diverse and vibrant place than I ever realized.
It's easy to get so caught up in coursework and clubs that you don't step foot off campus for weeks—I know how attractive Netflix and takeout can be the week before a big test. But if you have a free Saturday afternoon, there are plenty of great options for weekend outings both in the immediate Georgetown area and Washington, DC at large.
- Baked and Wired. This one's a given: the best cupcakes in Georgetown (and the world, probably) are within walking distance of the front gates. They offer a variety of delicious baked goods, coffees, teas, and some unnaturally good granola. If it's a nice day, walk down to the Waterfront afterward and hang out with the ducks.
- Busboys and Poets. Located in Washington's historic U Street Corridor, the bookstore is a great place to enjoy a tasty meal while also browsing the eclectic titles on offer. Check their website for regularly scheduled open mic nights and poetry readings.
- The Smithsonian. You can spend hours in the Smithsonian museums, exploring the engaging, informative exhibits. Best of all, entry is completely free, subsidized by the government. My childhood favorite is the Natural History Museum, with collections of fossils and an extensive exhibit devoted to gemstones and minerals. But even for long-time DC residents, the Smithsonian has unexplored corners. Just a few months ago, I stopped by the National Museum of African Art, a seemingly small building next to the Smithsonian Castle, and ended up staying the whole afternoon, blown away by the quality and presentation.
- Paddling on the Potomac. From the Key Bridge Boathouse, rent a canoe or kayak and explore the river, paddling past Roosevelt Island and around the monuments. Outdoor Education offers several group kayaking trips throughout the year, but sign up as soon as possible—reservations book up quickly.
- Eastern Market. Located on the orange, blue, and silver metro lines, Eastern Market is a hub for local farmers, merchants, and artisans. On the weekends, the outdoor market features fresh produce, flowers, arts, crafts, jewelry, and antiques, as well as live music. Even if you're low on money, just walking around, taking in the sights and sounds, and looking at the paintings and cloth and intricate jewelry is a fun way to spend an afternoon. Turn down West Broad Street and you'll find yourself at Hole in the Wall Books, a tiny used bookstore packed floor to wall with volumes on every subject imaginable.
These are just a few of my favorite things to do on the weekends. The Georgetown area is packed with restaurants, parks, museums, libraries—and of course, the monuments. So grab your metro card, a willing friend, and go exploring!
