My Reaction to the 2016 Election

From The Girl Who Kept Silent For Too Long
Wall Street Journal

It is very easy to stay silent about the "could be" and "should be," especially when it is as touchy of a subject as this election. However, tonight, I can't stay silent. Tonight my anger and tears have taken over, and I feel defeated, but I also feel selfish. Who am I to be upset about the results? Yes, I am a woman, one of the many groups Donald Trump has victimized, but I am White, I am Upper-Middle Class, and I am getting my college education. As fearful as I am for this country, I can think of millions of others who are most likely far more fearful than I. The fact that one of my best friends who is a Muslim has to worry about being kicked out of the country makes me sick. The fact that my friends who are in the LGBT community have to live under someone who believes in conversion therapy makes me sick. The fact that the only race that actually voted for Trump by majority were whites makes me sick. This is not the America that people dream of coming to and this is not the America that I want to live in. "So leave!" scream the Trump supporters. Let me tell you something. If I had to listen to you say "Thanks Obama" for eight years, I'm sure as hell not going to stay quiet.

Let's put peoples' hatred for "Killary" aside and just focus on Trump. You can preach his policies all day to me, and I will never support him. My brain cannot comprehend the amount of hate that leaves his mouth on a daily basis. Policies mean nothing when you're a straight up a-hole. Parents who are trying to teach their young boys to respect women and to treat everyone with dignity no matter their race will have a very difficult time with that now. Mothers who want their daughters to grow up empowered will have to explain why the President says what he says during his "locker room talk." I can't imagine raising a child today when the leader of the free world doesn't believe in the free world unless is it white and led by men. For those of you who voted him in for his stance on abortion, you should rethink that. Stand where you want to on abortion, but he wants to cut funding for Planned Parenthood, who not only provides birth control to those in need, but who also keeps those women healthy. Without it, there will be more unplanned pregnancies. But of course we don't want these young mothers to be able to get welfare even though they couldn't afford birth control to prevent the pregnancy in the first place. You are literally screwing over thousands of young girls who are far worse off than you. Put yourself in their shoes and realize the hypocrisy of it all.

Next, let's talk about foreign policy. I have a ton of International friends, mostly at my school, and they all thought we were a joke when Trump got the nomination. Now that he has won, it's safe to say they are all laughing, not only because it is humorous, but because it is pathetic. While Trump may have a lot of ideas, his Foreign Policy is non-existent. Good luck "making America great again" without the financial and trade support of other countries.

I could write an entire dissertation on how big of a disaster this election has been, but I'll leave it at this. By voting in Donald Trump, you have told young girls and boys that it is okay to hate somebody for their skin color, that it is acceptable to sexually assault somebody, and that you can succeed in life with a bad hair do and a spray tan. We are officially back in the 1950s, so we might as well bring back McCarthyism and Elvis. Touché, Mr. President. Or should I say toupee?

P.S. We are going from Michelle to Melania... Let that sink in.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
