Everybody is always a bit biased when they say they have the best roommate ever. In actuality, roommates are a pretty strange concept. Most of us go from living in a room alone for 18 years to sharing our entire living space with a human being we have most likely never met. Needless to say, I was a tad nervous to meet my roommate. People kept asking me things like, "What if you don't like her?" or "What if you just don't work well together?" Fortunately, I can say I have the best roommate ever.
From the hours spent at the rec center, pouring over books, watching movies, or eating at the dining hall, we always manage to find time to spend together. Our schedules are not necessarily the most convenient with my 8 a.m. class Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and her early morning Tuesday classes. I never thought I would spend a large amount of my time with my roommate. I expected us to sleep in the same room, but luckily I have found a friend up for any challenge who is always willing to be a fantastic listener.
Recruitment week was one of the most difficult weeks of my life and her support through it helped me realize I picked the best roommate. After I would come back crying or exhausted, she was always ready with ice cream or a movie to watch. She became frustrated with my endless sorority jabber and jointly shared in my joy as I pledged Phi Mu.
Toward the end of the already rough week, my body decided to contract the flu. This was unfortunately very ill-timed as I had a full day of preference rounds ahead of me. I was miserable. I came home that night to a balloon, a gift card to my favorite restaurant, and several different packs of medication. I was so moved by this gesture I couldn't help but cry. (I was also very emotional from being sick and tired which didn't help.) She is always right there to lend a helping hand for me whenever I need anything, and I could not have asked for a better companion during my freshman year.
I never realized by coming into Colby Hall that afternoon I would meet one of my best friends. My schedule is slightly difficult, but she is always ready to work out, eat or study whenever it is most convenient for me.
One of my favorite moments was seeing my roommate and my sorority sisters interact. She did not participate in recruitment, which made me hopeful that she would bond with my sisters quickly. I could never have imagined how well they all would get along. My sisters take her in as one of their own true friends and it is so exciting to see a bond like that between people I care about so much. Bottom line is, if you are nervous about your roommate, don't be. If you are lucky like me, they may end up one of your best friends.
