As my freshman year of college comes to a close I can’t help but think of everything that has happened this year. When people say these are the fastest four years of your life they aren’t kidding. I have no clue how it’s already the beginning of May. It really does feel like yesterday was move-in day. Sophomore year is going to be different and the novelty of college will be gone. So here is an ode to freshman year of college.
Nothing compares to the weird high you get from going to a real college party for the first time. All eyes are on you…seriously! Welcome Week is basically a week of constant partying when the older students go out and scope out the new meat. You feel like you are royalty when your older friend introduces you to people over and over again. Everyone wants to get to know you. The guys actually try to act appealing by asking you about yourself and eventually asking for your number. Everyone seems so welcoming and willing to help you find your new home. Girls are on the hunt to find their new BFF’s cause college is where you find your bridesmaids for your wedding or some crap like that, right? All the girls flock together and become fast friends and slowly but surely you find the girls that you could actually see yourself hanging out with. Oh and the excitement that is decorating your dorm room!
You get to show the world your personality with a new bedspread and pictures of you and your high school friends on the wall of your room that is built for Keebler Elves to live in. If you’re a really cool college kid you are sure to have twinkly lights, a tapestry, or better yet both. Then comes classes where you need to find a decent human to sit next to that could possibly if everything works out become your “in class friend” that is your go to person to sit next to in class and complain about the class with. Another new adventure for freshman is deciding if you want to join a fraternity or sorority. That is a whole other article in itself, but once you decide what you are going to do and recruitment season is over you have either joined a group of 100+ men or women or you decided not to go Greek.
After the thousands of instagram pictures have been posted and status updates about adjusting to college, the dust starts to settle and you get used to your new normal. Finally when you start to get into the swing of things you blink and it’s the end of April. Yep, bye freshman year of college, just like that you are looking at pictures on your camera roll of Halloween swearing that was less than a month ago.
So what’s next?...Oh yeah sophomore year of college. Instead of getting bombarded at parties during Welcome Week you will be doing the introductions because everyone already knows you. Guys are not trying to learn where you’re from or get your number. You are with your usual group of friends so there is no need to converse with other females. Your status updates no longer have to do with getting used to college and are now about getting used to living in an apartment. You aren’t deciding if Greek life is for you because you already dealt with that freshman year. Yep, the shinny new college experience is gone, but you wouldn’t trade those awkward freshman memories for the world.
