College Advice I Will Give You Before Your Freshman Year

Leave the past in the past.

We all faced some type of traumatic experience during our senior year of high school. Perhaps the only reason why we chose a school far away is for a fresh new start. Always remember that whatever you are running away from; that the life in front of you is far more important than the life behind you. Leave the past in the past.

Discover yourself.

Whether it is struggling with your sexual preferences or struggling to find yourself this is the time to find out who the real you is. College is a zero judging zone where no one really cares who you are, what you look like, or if you're "weird" or not. There's not bullying, there are no "popular cliques" anymore, and no one is inferior to you.

Explore your inner passions.

I do warn you, you might not stick with your original major after exploring other careers. College is about finding yourself, and so are your first two years of college for you to discover what you're either good at or passionate about. It is totally okay for you to change your major your second semester of college, perhaps you are already an exploratory.

Build good study habits, take school serious.

Make sure to take college really serious because this isn't free education messed up and scholarship granters won't give you a second chance. You mess up and could end up either in debt or out of school until you figure it out. We are all on the same boat after all, and I guarantee you everyone around you gives a f*** about their education. It's okay to also party, perhaps join greek life but do set yourself some limits to what you do and who you surround yourself around with.

Don't let freshman 15 catch you.

Freshman fifteen is a legit thing. Especially for residents that stay on campus. It's such a dramatic routine change, from eating habits too when and how you workout, to how you spend your free time. The typical college life is quite sedentary, you wake up and go to your classes and pretty much eat whatever you want at whatever times you want. After you are done with your assignments if you don't have a job or some sort of other extracurricular you might find yourself with lots of free time. The habits begin with usually over-napping, playing video games or binge watching shows, the sedentary routine kicks in and so does freshman 15...

Get involved!

Here I am, I ended up becoming a writer for The Odyssey which is one of the best things I have ever done. I've always loved writing and I decided to explore this inner passion of mine so this ended up being the best fit for me. There's a lot of clubs you can join, fun classes to take, there's also Greek life. This is the time to put towards those good scripts for your future resume. After all, college is all about building connections, building character, and furthering your education so that you're ready to conquer the world with your badass degree or whatever you wish to pursue after.

Make your freshman year your favorite year of college.

Make lots of friends! Step out of your comfort zone! Put in the dedication and hard work towards those grades! Party hard and have fun! Fall in love with yourself or with a significant other! Attend all the events! Make memories you'll never forget! MAKE YOUR FRESHMAN YEAR, YOUR FAVORITE YEAR OF COLLEGE.

I hope this advice will go to good use. Good luck during your first year of the rest of your life!!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
