I'm very happy to announce I've been chosen to be a leader for UC Open School. Part of being a leader means recruiting new volunteers! Here's where you guys come in....
First let me tell you a little about UC Open School, it is a partnership between UC and St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. Our organization is providing a free clinic right above the food pantry, we're located on the second floor. It is ran by UC students from the college of allied health sciences, medicine, nursing, and pharmacy. Faculty volunteers are also apart of this awesome organization, as they oversee everything we are doing.
At the clinic, the students work together to provide free health screenings to the patients. We measure their height and weight, their BMI, blood pressure, and blood glucose level. Leaders are also trained in motivational speaking and can address patient concerns with health or medical conditions. We do this every Saturday from 9am-12pm.
Volunteering is so easy and it's something everyone can do to help their community. All you would need to volunteer with UC Open School is sign up on our signup link (located at the bottom of this page), come bright and early Saturday morning (at 8:30am), and once you get connected with a leader you will be shown how to do the screening. You don't have to do them until you feel comfortable. I highly recommend watching others to learn their style and then finding your own way!
The best part of volunteering through this organization is the pleasure of helping others. Some of our patients haven't been to the doctor for years, some have stopped taking the medication their doctors advised, and some just simply don't have health insurance. It could something as simple as them just not having transportation to the doctors or it could be their fear of what they'll find out. No matter the situation, we want to help them and give them as much as we can.
This volunteer experience is extremely rewarding because you are helping those who are under-served in the community. It is very beneficial for those looking to go into the medical field, we are just getting an early start! Also, if you have anyone who would like to become a patient, direct them our way and we would be glad to start the process.
