I wish to be as free as a bird...
Held by nothing but an unspoken word.
Wings like silk and voice like magic,
Majestic, mysterious, beautiful, tragic.
I wish to be as free as a star,
Watching and waiting from so far.
With the moon at my side and the sun as my friend,
I’d watch and I’d wait for the world to end.
I wish to be as free as a cloud,
Graceful and floating and not held by sound.
Up in the dark where all the planes fly,
Keeping watch over the cities at night.
I wish to be as free as a shark,
Unafraid of the water, unafraid of the dark.
The fish be my prey and the ocean my home,
Vast and deep for me to roam.
I wish to be as free as time,
Turning and turning with every flip of the dime.
Slipping through fingers as easily as sand,
Passing so quickly with every tick of a hand.
I wish to be as free as a tree,
Graceful and silent among fallen leaves.
No matter how much they leave me or laugh as they fall,
I welcome the leaves back with open arms.
I wish to be as free as a song,
Belted by lungs all the day long.
Backed by a beat and voices singing,
Heard in every church bell ringing.
I wish to be as free as these,
Doing, within reason, whatever I please.
