Formal Recruitment As Told By A PNM

Formal Recruitment As Told By A PNM

Here's to the girls who never thought they would join a sorority. Here's to us. I am the type of girl that never thought I would join a sorority in college. I believed the sorority stereotype and never thought that I would fit in. However, by my second semester of sophomore year, I realized that if I didn’t at least go through recruitment and see what these girls were like, I’d regret it. So I went through formal recruitment. Explained by images, here are the thoughts that ran through my head over the course of the week:

1. If I don’t try, I’ll never know.

2. The first day, I was so excited to get started. I couldn’t wait to meet the members of Panhel and be introduced to the five sororities on campus.

3. The second day was filled with a wide range of emotions. I was excited to get out and meet the different sisters and see what the personality and dynamic of each sorority was like. But I was also extremely nervous that I would say something stupid and ruin my chances of receiving a bid from a sorority.

4. However, all these worries went away when I stepped into the house that I hope will welcome me into their home. The conversation flowed easily between the sisters and me, and I wasn’t nervous about saying the wrong things or messing up. I felt like Harry Potter after he walked into into Hogwarts.

5. And when you connect so strongly with the girls in that house that you talked to for a mere 30 minutes, you feel like you've gained new best friends.

6. When all the houses try to stuff you with food, and you happily accept.

7. So the second day turns out to be a complete success and you walk out of the event like this:

8. Even though you are completely exhausted by the end of the night.

9. And that third night when you see which houses invited you back, you can't contain your excitement.

10. Walking into those houses again and feeling completely at home:

11. Feeling that quiet understanding when you realize exactly where you belong:

12. And attempting to pick out The. Perfect. outfit for the final night, aka Pref Night -- and by far the most important.

I was the girl who decided to go through formal recruitment the day before the first event. I was the girl who swore I would never join a sorority when I started college. Before transferring to Lycoming College I attended a huge university where the sororities were their negative stereotype, but after going through the events this week, I’ve never been happier to be wrong.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
