For My Grandparents
Alycia Daniel

For some, grandparents are seen on special holidays. Sometimes they are people that you get phone calls from every now and then or you don't even hear from. For me, though, my grandparents weren't any of those.

I am extremely blessed to have the grandparents that I do have because I feel like I have second parents in a way. They helped raise me to be the person I am now. They have always supported me with sports, school and with anything else I had my heart set out to do.

Yes, other people only see that my grandparents are old, but to me they are not. They have such young souls. I remember being little and they used to stay up late at night until I would fall asleep. Nineteen-years later, when I go to visit we will stay up late watching movies or just talking about “back in the day.” Those will be the times that I will remember forever even though it’s just the little things.

They have showed me things I don't think they realize they have. Beside my parents, they have showed me what hard work is, what being strong really is, what it means to be there for someone in times of need, how to be social and that true love does exist.

I am also writing this to thank them for being the grandparents that they are. For always going to all the events that you can attend, whether it was promotions for going into different grades, cheerleading competition or signing to the college of my dreams.

I am extremely thankful for the grandparents that I do have because they are the people that I know I have if I ever fall they will be there in a heartbeat to help pick me up. So, thank you for always listening to my problems and giving me great advice. They are always there when I need them no matter what time it is. I know I can pick up the phone and call just because I wanted to hear their voice.

I could go on and on about how thankful I am for them because they have gone above and beyond when it comes to myself and their other grandchildren.

So thank you again for all that you've done.

Love,

Your oldest granddaughter

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
