Friendships: Searching For My Cristina Yang

Taking wedding vows and implying them to everyday friendships.

After watching twelve seasons of "Grey's Anatomy," the search for "my person" was on. The bond between Meredith and Cristina is something I believe everyone longs for the dance parties, heart to hearts in each other's beds, and everything in between. I was determined to find someone who was my better half and completed me.

The hunt for my Cristina Yang began.

As I was thinking about finding "my person," I questioned those surrounding me and soon realized I had people all around me who were qualified. I was just belittling their abilities to be a Cristina because their struggles, selfishness, and inability to be who I wanted them to be. Though it ends up, I was being the selfish one.

With the realization I just discovered, I was reminded of the vows we make to our loved ones on our wedding days: "To have and to hold. For better or for worse. For richer or poorer. In sickness and health. To love and to cherish. Till death do us part."

These vows are promises we are dedicating to someone we love despite hardships we might face. It dawned on me, though, why are these oaths only made for marriages? Obviously, I know they are a little different and more specific for the ones we wed to, but taking the basic foundation of the vows, they can apply to our everyday friendships.

When I make a connection with someone, I plan on making them my ride or die. I am in it for the long run. Snapchat streaks and spontaneous road trips have nothing on the bond I have with someone I call a friend. I invest everything I have into friendships and I expect nothing less.

There are many times we celebrate the good times with these so called friends, but how often do we run when things are bad or they are in trouble? Taking a deeper look, I realized that sometimes I run away rather than sticking around.

This unspoken vow I had made to my friends was not being upheld, and I was deeply saddened by that.

The people closest to us are typically the ones who can hurt us the deepest. Intentionally or not, our emotions are being mistreated by the actions they are making. Drug abuse, alcoholism, being self-absorbed, and two-sided are only a few to list off. Each time someone you care about falls into one or more of these categories, we cannot help our hearts from being wrenched a little.

They say, "Bad company corrupts good character" and I let that be an excuse to leave the side of some of my best friends. I allowed the world to tell me that the actions they were taking were only harmful to them and myself.

As that was true, I forgot that sometimes the weakest soldiers need someone to carry them back to strength and I would want someone to do the same for me.

Back to the vows, "For better or for worse."

We all experience trials that some people might be ashamed of, but why do we let that stop us loving one and another with our full potential? The next time you question where your friendships stand, remember the promises you are making to one and another. A friend is someone you can turn to no matter the time of day. Someone you can laugh till you cry with or cry till you start laughing. Someone who makes fun of your stupidest moments but also brings to life your greatest qualities. All of these things are what makes friendships so special and worth fighting for. So take a close look around you and know that it is all worth the ride!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
