Hockey is one of the most brutal sports there is--but not just between the players.
The rivalries that the fans create is something you won't find in any other sport - and it gets ugly. And by ugly, I mean absolutely disgusting when it comes to the little act the Philadelphia Flyers fans pulled Wednesday night against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks has been under investigation in a rape accusation since August. As the investigation continues, Kane vowed to focus on hockey for the sake of his team.
This situation prompted Flyers fans to chant "she said no" every time Kane touched the puck on Wednesday night at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
What I'm talking about here is not whether Kane is guilty or innocent--it is about the classless behavior on the parts of the Philadelphia Flyers fans.
Booing is one thing.
Kane deserves to be booed for putting himself in this situation. But chanting "she said no" brings the victim into it - which is completely unacceptable and insensitive.
I've been a hockey fan for a very long time. I understand the competitive nature and the taunting. I understand the rivalries that feel a little more personal. But this needs to be stripped down and as much as I hate to be that person to say "it's just a sport," this is the most appropriate time for me to do so.
It's unfair of me to make this conjecture - but I highly believe that a man started that chant in the arena - which only shows how much of a joke rape culture is to males. Patrick Kane's investigation is not funny. Rape is not funny. Using it as ammunition at a sporting event is not funny. We don't know for sure - but there could be a woman out there that is utterly humiliated and horrified because her situation is being made fun of on a national level when it's a personal nightmare.
And for what? To make a hockey player slip up on the ice.
I truly feel bad for the Philadelphia Flyers organization for having fans so blatantly distasteful.
