All great writers -- even me -- come to a point in their writing careers where they just can't think of something to write about for one reason or another. If this is happening to you, then I would like to suggest some combination of the following to help jostle your mind into a more creative place.
1. Exercise
Go out and get some fresh air. Go for a walk or a run, play some ball, whatever it is you do -- the important thing is to just keep moving. When you're done, you'll likely feel better and be in a better frame of mind for creative thought.
2. Brainstorm
This might sound cliche, but it tends to work. Just start writing down everything that pops into your head, regardless of how dumb it might seem to your conscious mind. One thing can lead to another, and soon those silly ideas end up taking you somewhere with serious writing potential.
3. Let Go
Believe it or not, you don't have to think up the world's greatest literary work right now. You could give it a break, go about your day as normal and then come back when you see something that gives you an idea naturally. Sometimes, that works better than trying to force an idea to come.
4. Looking Back
Read some of what you've already written in the past. Are you noticing any trends? Do you see any gaps you'd like to fill in? You will oftentimes be your biggest inspiration.
5. Communication
And last but not least, talk to people. Find out what they're interested in reading about, and see if it matches up with something you'd like to write about. If two heads are better than one, then a lot of heads are probably pretty darn good.
Try these out -- you never really know what is going to work in a given instance because it can be different every time. Whatever you do, don't beat yourself up over it if you can't think of something. Life is too short for that.
