Writer’s block is something that everyone who writes has experienced at some point or another. Whether you were thinking of things to write for a high-school paper, or writing the next chapter to your seventh novel, when you get writer’s block, it is seemingly impossible to reel your concentration back in. That’s why you just have to do a few things, take a step back and breathe. The ideas will come in no time.
1. Do Something To Take Your Mind Of Your Work
Do something fun! Something you enjoy. Read a book, play a video-game. Do whatever. Just do something that isn’t writing. Have you been meaning to binge watch a television show? Do it. What harm could it cause? Deadlines are deadlines, but hey…if you have several hours to go until that deadline is up and you feel you can make the time, just go for it. Watch Daredevil on Netflix, that paper will just…write itself. Totally.
2. Take A Nap
What's better than a nap when you’re stressed? Nothing, that’s what. Take twenty minutes to unwind, or an hour. Or if you’re like me, an hour nap, that actually takes up three somehow. You can write later. The feeling of waking up after that “short,” power nap…it’s hard to describe really. It just feels...great. Though, writing that paper is hardly what you want to do after getting up.
3. Eat Something
Yes, of course it’s time to eat! You just woke up from a great nap, you may or may not have done some fun stuff, and now you need fuel to continue on with your day! Yeah, yeah…that deadline is coming up. Just a couple hours now, but it’ll be fine. Just keep any ideas you get in the back of your mind. You can think them over as you find something to snack on; or cook if you're capable of such a thing.
4. Procrastinate Some More
I mean, well…not “procrastinate.” You don’t want to do that, it’s unproductive. Do fun things! Yeah. If you still feel you have writer’s block, just go back to doing things that take all your attention away from work that might need to be done. Go outside, take a hike, go fishing, or stay inside and color. Coloring isn’t only for children anymore, after all! Just do anything that isn’t writing that big essay, or article or what have you. Just don’t call it procrastinating. Then you might feel bad.
5. Finally Write Something
Really, just write something. You’ve had your fun and all, procrastination or not. Now it’s time to get yourself back in that chair and start writing. Brainstorm ideas, free write, do whatever you have to. Get those ideas out onto the page…or screen in most cases nowadays. Who knows, in the end you might have something along the lines of this article here? Writer’s block is truly funny sometimes.
