Everyone loves Disney, and I'm sure if you are as much of a Disney fan as I am, you probably hear some of these as frequently as I do. These are just a few of my favorites of the things I run into on an almost day to day basis because of my undying obsession of Disney.
1. "Isn't that for kids?"
Yeah, it might be, but what's wrong with holding on to a little bit of your childhood? Can't you remember when you were growing up, and you saw that familiar mouse on the screen? You're telling me that it did not make your heart skip a beat? Disney is a major player in most of our childhoods, so yeah I like watching Disney movies. It reminds me of a simpler, happier time.
2. "Happy endings aren't real."
With that attitude, they aren't. Some people need to stop being so pessimistic and learn how to be happy about things. It is not cool to be so apathetic all the time! Show some emotion and be passionate about things! And another thing, this view that there is no such thing as happy endings is not healthy. Happy endings are not as extorted as they are in the movies, but it's the happy ending at the end of the day that really counts. So cheer up, smile, and make a new friend every once in a while.
3. "The same thing happens in every movie."
That is incorrect. Movies like "Inside Out" and "Big Hero 6" are hitting harder issues like how to deal with death and mental issues. How could you forget "The Color of Friendship," the movie that taught us not to judge people based on their skin tone? That sounds different to me.
4. "Why do you have princess Band-Aids? Why haven't you grown up yet?"
Um, because I want Cinderella to protect my cuts from germs? Why do you care so much? Why do you have boring flesh tones? I also have ones with Avengers on them in case you need to protect your fragile masculinity.
5. "I can't believe you can remember all of that from your childhood!"
I am almost offended by this statement. I watch Disney movies all the time; it's not hard to remember something I watched five minutes ago. I brought all of my Disney movies with me to college and it's actually how I made some of my friends—with all night Disney binges.
But, it's OK, you do you and don't let anyone tell you off. Just remember, in the words of the great Walt Disney himself, "The more you like yourself, the less you are like anyone else, which makes you unique." So keep up your obsession and remember that it's okay to show emotions and interest in what you are passionate about.
