The cold crisp air starts to roll in which means one of the greatest holidays is coming soon. Christmas of course! It is nice to sit by the fire and drink hot cocoa, but Philly has so much to offer when it comes to those wintery activities. So get bundled up and head out into the city to explore and have fun with your friends and significant other at the top five places to go for Christmas festivities.
1. The Rothman Rink at Dilworth Park
The oh so famous Christmas tradition that every one does when winter comes around is ice-skating. There are a few places to go ice-skating. One place is only a few subway stops away right next to City Hall known as The Rothman Ice Rink at Dilworth Park. The city put up an ice-skating rink with twinkling lights hung above for Philly residents to enjoy. The rentals and the admission fee add up to $14 per person. It’s a price that is friendly to college students and will not break your bank account. It is a cute and fun activity to do any day of the week, especially at night when all the trees are lit up in lights and the magnificent buildings surrounding everyone while they skate.
2. Christmas Village
Right off the subway stop of City Hall there is another great holiday festivity held right in LOVE Park known as Christmas Village. There is small cabins set up in circles around the fountain with local and non-local people that are selling knitted scarves, ornaments, paintings, and so much more. Visitors can also take a picture in front of the famous LOVE sculpture with the beautiful Christmas tree in the background that stands in the center of the fountain.
3. BlueCross RiverRink Winterfest on the Delaware River Waterfront
The third place is the beautiful BlueCross RiverRink Winterfest on the Delaware River Waterfront. There is a huge ice rink right next to the water with a great view of the bridge, ships and city skyline. There are also shops, food and drink areas, winter warming cottages that have fireplaces in it to keep people warm, and the lodge with sofas and table for people to sit and talk. It is a great family friendly place where people can spend hours there in the fun events that are offered.
4. Comcast Holiday Spectacular
Visitors can gather around the Comcast Experience video wall to capture the Comcast Holiday Spectacular. It is a 15-minute show that showcases dancers from the Pennsylvania Ballet dancing to "The Nutcracker." A sleigh floats over the Philadelphia countryside and actors and actresses from the Walnut Street Theatre perform to a soundtrack of the 64-person orchestra. The show runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. excluding 5 p.m. on weekdays.
5. South Street Lights
In South Philly, the famous South Street and streets around it are decorated with lights and on the houses, buildings, and over the streets. It is a spectacular sight to walk and drive through at night. It is a must see and you can spend hours looking at all the lights.
