Moving into your dorm room freshman year is a scary thing. I remember I had no idea what to bring, and no clue what to expect. Even though it was difficult and frustrating at times, I got through dorm living, and it honestly wasn't as awful as everyone said it was. To help make your dorm room experience the best it can be I recommend you have these five items on your packing list.
1. A fan is a MUST
Even if your not a fan person, it's crucial that you bring one. My freshman dorm room did not have air conditioning and at times (especially at night) it got pretty unbearable. My roommate and I both brought fans and they were constantly running. Fans also work great to muffle the noise of loud neighbors and students in the hallway.
2. Microwave
Eating cafeteria food for every meal is a big change, and I guarantee your stomach will start to disagree with you. Having a microwave in our dorm room allowed us to make soup, popcorn, pizza rolls, oatmeal and basically anything we were craving we could warm up in the microwave. There will also be days when you just don't have enough time to make it to the cafeteria and having a microwave will still allow you to eat.
3. Slippers
During the winter months I definitely recommend that you bring some slippers. The floors in dorm rooms often get cold, and the heat doesn't always work the best.
4. Extension cords and power strips
My freshman dorm had minimal outlets and it became a pain trying to get everything plugged in. The outlets were also placed in the most inconvenient spots so extension cords were a must!
5. Noise-Canceling Headphones
The dorms get noisy, and it often is difficult to stay focused on homework and studying. Especially if you have a roommate who loves the TV and loud music. Noise canceling headphones saved my life my freshman year. I was able to get my studying and get homework done without having to go to the library or a coffee shop.
Dorm living is a big change for some people, and it can be hard to adjust to such a small space. The best way you can make your dorm experience a positive one is by making yourself comfortable and feel at home. A fan, microwave, some slippers, extension cords and fancy headphones may seem like simple random items but they will all help make the dorm life adjustment more easy and enjoyable!
