In our rush through our everyday life, it becomes easy to fall into the same patterns and the same routines. Life becomes a list of things to do and, before you know it, you’re simply rolling through the motions. It’s like you’re there, but you’re on cruise control. Here are five small things you can start doing every day to keep you humble and grateful.
1. Tell at least two people every day that you appreciate them.
We all enjoy compliments and being told that we are doing a good job, even if it is just at existing. Spreading the love and making sure you tell your coworker, friend, family member or even some stranger who held the door open for you, “I appreciate you!” is a small task that can be done daily to brighten someone else’s day! Not only does it bring a smile to others’ faces, but I guarantee it will start to put you in a better mood, too!
2. Wake up every morning and say out loud three things you are thankful for.
This can include anything – your friends and family, that adorable dog down the street, or hot showers! Too many times we take things and people for granted; taking the time every morning to stop and really think about whom and what you have in your life will help to brighten your mood, be thankful and to be less likely to take people and things for granted.
3. Anytime you have a positive thought about someone else, say it out loud!
Think about it, when someone compliments you, how often do you think about it? If you’re anything like me, you obsess over the compliment the rest of the day and can’t stop smiling for at least a solid hour or two. I know how much I love it when someone randomly compliments my smile, my hair, my shoes or anything, really! So, don’t you think others would, too?
4. Do one thing every day that makes someone else’s life easier.
Everyone has a crazy, busy life, and we all could use a hand every now and again, so why not be that helping hand? Maybe you believe in karma, maybe you don’t, but one thing that is true is that nine times out of ten people will reciprocate. It only takes one person to start a chain of random acts of kindness, and you never know, one day it might come full circle and someone will be there to help you when you need it! So hold that door open, pick up that piece of paper that person just dropped, and always remember that everyone could use a helping hand!
5. Make eye contact, smile and wave!
It sounds like common sense, right? Go out and take a walk in a public area, though, and count how many people actually do that. You might be shocked at how many don’t, so why can’t it start with you? Too often people are involved in their phones, embarrassed to talk to strangers or maybe just shy. Doing those three simple steps might just make someone’s day, and you never know, you could end up with a new friend.
Doing these five simple tasks will not only benefit other people, but you as well. And remember, always stay humble and kind, and try not to take life for granted.
