I never saw myself as the “sorority type” which would explain why I was initially a little hesitant to sign up for rush. But now, after being a sorority member for almost a year, I have come to realize that the stereotypes about sorority members do not always apply.
When going through rush I did not know how to go about it. I got the typical advice to be myself and talk to everyone. Not being very good at socializing, this was an experience. If I had to sum it up in one word, I would say rush was definitely stressful. But despite the stress during this process, at the end of it I found my home.
It sounds cliche, but I walked in and knew that this was the house I belonged in. It’s hard to explain but when you know, you know. I was so nervous, not knowing if they liked me too, and then I received my bid. As someone who's not into the whole jumping up and down screaming thing, I was a little taken back. But then continued to call my best friend after, screaming and telling her all about it.
I then went through the new member process, where I met my new member class. These girls quickly became my best friends. Within days we knew everything about each other. I can honestly say that I have a close friendship with all 11 of them. We’re all so different and it makes for some pretty entertaining group chat conversations and situations in general. I could not ask for a better group of girls to share this bond with, but don’t let this go to your head guys, you still annoy me 80% of the time no matter how much I love you all.
Then came our initiation; a night I’ll never forget. My big handing me my first pair of letters, seeing my new member class all wearing theirs, all of our brand new sisters congratulating us. Best. Feeling. Ever. I wish I could relive it all over again. I wore my letters the next day to class, so proud to show I was apart of this amazing organization.
Back to now, a member for almost a year, and sisters all over the country. I get to participate in fun events to help others with some of my best friends, and have a ton of people I can turn to for help with anything. Whether it be advice on what professors to take, or which dress to buy off Tobi. I can honestly say that I have made friends for life with amazing people. All so diverse and bringing so many different aspects to our organization. Although I’ve only been a member for so long, everyday I am reminded of why I love this group of girls so much. Little moments that just make me think of how grateful I am for all of them. The opportunities that have already been presented to me in such a short amount of time is another reminder as to how grateful I am.I never pictured myself joining a sorority in college, but now, I can’t imagine ever not.
So here’s to the amazing girls I get to call my sisters, thank you for finding me and loving me before you ever really got to know me. Thank you for letting me join you all and being my home away from home.
