Functions: one-night events that occur at universities throughout the nation. Sororities offer a plethora of themes for these events, ranging from patriotic to under the sea to biker bash. Not only do girls look forward to them for weeks, but guys covet an invite to these exclusive events. Everyone, regardless of whether or not they participate in Greek life, hopes to attend at least one function during their college career.
With every function comes the fear of a bad date and sadly it happens quite often. There’s the “too drunk to function” date. The date that leaves your function to go hookup with some other girl. The date that tells you you’re not good enough. Oh, and the date who flirts with a different girl all night. I am, of course, describing dates that I have taken to functions, because I sure do know how to pick 'em!
It really is easy to be a decent, even good, function date and here’s how:
1. Text your date leading up to the function.
Nothing is more awkward than knowing absolutely nothing about a date you have to spend several hours with one night. It doesn’t take much time, and let's be real, you’re probably on your phone all day looking at your fraternity’s GroupMe, so shoot your date a quick text. Will she think it’s weird? Of course not, she’ll appreciate the groundwork you’re trying to lay down.
2. Ask your date if she wants anything for the pregame.
It’s a simple question and it doesn’t have to be a big deal. If you want your date to buy you a $25 t-shirt, buy her something to have at the pregame. It really is that simple.
3. Be on time.
If she says you need to be at the sorority house by 7:00 p.m. for check in, you really need to be there at 6:50 p.m. Most of the time it’s not even her choice, she literally HAS to be there at said time.
4. Hang out with her.
She invited you to a function that all of her friends will be at, don’t make her look like a fool by ditching her. Be there, talk to her, get to know her friends. Talking to your date and acknowledging her presence is greatly appreciated, believe me.
5. Respect her.
It’s one night. One night that you should devote your attention to someone besides yourself. She’s not asking for the world. All she wants out of a function date is someone who is fun and down to dance. While at the function, pay attention to your date, because after all she did invite you. Once you two part ways, feel free to flirt with whomever you want, but don’t do it at her sorority’s function.
Honestly it’s not too hard to please a girl. Show up, be present, be attentive and talk to her. After all, you’re probably in it for the t-shirt, so at least make spending $25 on it justifiable.
