Find Your College Family

To the people who make Hofstra home

A little over a month ago, I said goodbye to my family and friends and headed to Hofstra. Of course, I had the stereotypical concern of "Would I make friends?"

Everyone had the same worry, so as we all began our search for life-long friends, all the doors in my long hallway remained open, everyone coming in and out of rooms, introducing themselves trying to make friends. That was the beginning for my college family.

My college family has made my transition to college so much easier, they make Hofstra home. They are the people helping me study, reminding of that paper I still haven't finished. The people always down to grab food or coffee, no matter the time. The people bringing you medicine when you are sick and all you want is your bed and mom. The people always making sure you're safe. The people you call when you get your first "A" on an exam. The people singing along to throwbacks with you at 1 am. The people you will look back on and be so thankful they are part of your life.

Finding your college family is finding home. I look forward to sitting in the lounge with them, trying to do homework, but probably ending up laughing really hard and talking about nothing and everything. These people make going back to Boston so bittersweet, knowing I won't see them for a few days, missing our long days and crazy nights. College friends, turned family make living at college so enjoyable, so easy. Knowing these people are always there, even at 3 am, as a constant support system is having a family away from your family.

To my college family, it may have only been one month that we are together but you are truly family, people I can always count on and will always look back on with the best memories. So here's to all of memories we've made in this last month and for the countless memories will continue to make. From our late night pizza runs, birthday celebrations, and crazy Saturday nights, and long Sunday's filled with homework, I will always look forward to the rest of our time together. I will always be thankful for Stuyvesant floor 3 and all the amazing memories and people this month at Hofstra has brought me.

Finding your college family, is making college home, they're the people you will treasure forever, your first friends and some of the best memories

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
