A video of two Olympic divers landing miserably in the South East Asian games in 2015 has been confused as footage from the Olympics in Rio this year. However, of the 13 Olympic athletes representing the Philippines this year, none are divers.
Most people watch the Olympics to see athletes of the highest caliber, training, and talent compete for the top. It isn't often that there are athletes who fail to perform to a certain degree. Olympic athletes are known to put incredible effort into their training regimens, to become literally the best they can be. From strict diets to crazy workout routines. So it was a surprise when the Olympic audience saw two Filipino divers, John Elmerson Fabriga and John David Pahoyo blotch their dives in Singapore last year. The two divers lovingly nicknamed the "splash brothers" by their fans have been the center of attention of social media users all around the world.
For some reason, both divers blotched their performance in their dive, but seem unfazed by their performance, and can be seen fist bumping each other in the Jacuzzi.
Despite their miserable performance of dual zeroes, the two Olympic divers garnered way more attention than any of the other divers hoped to by competing in the Olympics.
I think there is a valuable lesson to be learned from John Elmerson Fabriga and John David Pahoyo. Most people who trained so long and hard to qualify to represent their country in the Olympics would be devastated and probably incapable of facing the embarrassment of such a performance. However, not only are they both unfazed by their performance; they are still able to support each other as friends and as teammates who both happened to mess up their event in the Olympics with the whole world watching. To the people who find their dives funny, they are funny, but they are also incredibly embarrassing. Being able to stand up and support your teammate after that kind of mess up requires the courage that many of us lack.
The way that the divers supported each other in the Jacuzzi shows that their relationship goes beyond just teammates and extends into great friendship.
