Dear White People: Fighting Hatred Is Not The Same As Fighting Racism
Los Angles Times

I have a perfunctory attitude towards the fight against white supremacy. Like everyone else, I want racism to end. But this “American fight to end hate” is attacking the symptom instead of the root cause of racism. The term racism was coined in 1902 by a man name Richard Henry Pratt. Pratt denounced segregation but was a racist himself. Fighting against hatred is all good and well but fighting hatred isn’t the same as fighting racism.

The words hatred and racism are not synonymous with each other. Hatred is having a strong dislike or ill will. Racism is having prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior. Read it again: the belief that one’s own race is superior this translates to white supremacy.

Neo Nazis and White nationalist are radical groups displaying racial hatred and racism. We imagine racist as white wrinkled monstrous men who are violent and treacherous. But Racist are those happy white people who smile in your face, but won’t touch your hand while giving you change back. Racist tendencies does vary. Believe it or not, a person can be racist and not have ill will. Contrary to popular belief, a Liberal can be racist. Yes, a Liberal can be racist.

Racism is on a spectrum and skin heads have been around forever so I ain’t worried about them. My dilemma is black kids meeting the same fate as Trayvon Martin. Employers and schools judging my hair texture and white people reminding me I’m black frustrates me. What troubles me is the covert racism that runs rampant in the Liberal mind.

White superiority has damaged the world more than natural disasters. Racism passed down from one generation to the next damaged the psyche of communities of color. The belief that white is superior, triggered Slavery, Segregation, and Colonization ( read Germs, Guns, and Steel).

This belief treads in our government, pop culture, school system, and society. Society teaches and implements white hierarchy. White men and women are on the top social food chain while black men and women are on the bottom. To make matters worst, black people put down other black people because they don't see their own race worthy.

Other minorities are between the chain separating themselves from the black minority. People have strong attitudes and opinions about black people rooted in racial stereotypes. We don’t live in a post-racial society. The Charlottesville white supremacist protest is a wake-up call.

Remember the #Oscar’s So white? Racism ain’t new, it's trendy again. To combat white supremacy, we must eradicate the institutions that promote it. If we don’t take steps to end systematic racism, the taking down of statues is meaningless.

Dear White people, fight white supremacist groups while fighting those people who mock us. Call out those who appropriate our culture. Stop tolerating covert racism. Respect safe places for black women and men.

Protect black kids from failing public school systems. Learn Black History. Preserve our communities. Protest gentrification. Stop demanding we assimilate. We don't need your heroism, We need your respect.

Dear white people you are the solution to racism.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
